What a nail-biter! Wadebridge played St Austell in the District Skittles Area semi-final on Wednesday 2nd March, coming from behind to win 252-248 on the final end.
Wayne got us off to a great start, scoring 9 and was amply supported by Nigel also with 9, enabling us to win the first end 44-40. In the second end, St Austell reversed the position to take a lead of 5, thanks to George scoring a 15. In the third end, Wadebridge got worse while St Austell maintained their form to extend their lead by 8.
In the fourth end Nigel suffered a brainstorm. Anyone can miss all the skittles once, but it takes a special skill to miss through the middle, then on the left and finally on the right in successive deliveries. Thankfully Kevin scored 13, limiting the deficit for the end to 5.
With a lead of 18 points, St Austell played another solid game in the fifth end, but Wadebridge came back strongly with everyone contributing, especially Mike with a 12, and Kevin with a 17 after clearing all nine pins with his first ball. This slashed the deficit to 3 going into the final end.
But then St Austell played their worst end of the match. Having averaged over 42 points per end so far, they managed only 35. This left Wadebridge with a chance, needing 39 to win, or 6.5 points per person as someone quickly worked out. The first five players kept their nerve and scored four 7s and a 6, so skip Kevin stepped up to the mark needing 5 to win. He scattered 7 pins with the first ball to take the match.
The match took place at the Kings Arms, Luxulyan, and a St Austell’s Brewery pub which serves good food. We had to arrive by six o’clock, with food pre-ordered, so as to clear from the bar before the quiz began. The skittle alley was in a room across the road, and had proper gutters down the sides of the alley and everything. It wasn’t so good on the heating, so resetting the skittles after each go proved a useful way of keeping warm.
Many thanks to Max and the friendly St Austell team for arranging things and being good company for the evening. Wadebridge will now play Lostwithiel in the Area final.
