The fifth Thursday of a month is traditionally wives/husbands/partners evening, a tradition upset by online meetings. We resurrected it last Thursday with a music quiz set by Martin Broadfoot.
Getting voice and music together is not so easily done in Zoom, but Martin was a BBC sound engineer and used his arcane skills and a variety of mystical black boxes and cables to be able to pose a question and play a snippet of music at the same time. He developed playlists covering topics as varied as 50s radio themes, backwards pop tunes, movies, 80s TV comedy, identify the band, movies, cops & robbers, novelty songs and yet more movies.
Meanwhile, Kevin Smith operated Zoom. We had decided that people answering questions on their own, or in pairs, could get tedious, especially if you didn’t know the answers. So we randomly allocated people to breakout rooms to answer questions in teams. Martin asked three questions on a subject, and then Kevin flipped people into the breakout rooms for two minutes to discuss and agree answers. On return, we had the answers, then three questions on another topic, breakout room, and so on for nine rounds.
Allocating sign-ons in threes meant there could be anything between three and six people in a team, depending on whether they were singles or pairs. However, some people didn’t like the idea, others had wifi problems, and others still had to leave early, so there were drop outs along the way, resulting in, for example, Mick Goward being left in a group on his own before the end. We did ask if people had had enough, but those remaining wanted the final three rounds, so we must have been doing something right. “Loved the breaking out into different chat rooms,” said Clive Robinson afterwards.
