"Friday 15th November saw the official opening of the Peace Garden at Wadebridge School, intended to provide a permanent legacy to those local heroes who students continue to research in their studies about the First World War. It will also provide a place to reflect, think and remember – a place to be mindful, to find healing and restoration.
Many of those attending the opening had in various ways given support to this project. Head teacher, Tina Yardley welcomed everyone and thanked them.
Year 11 students Maisy, Ellie and Rachael performed a song which they had composed reflecting on loss, remembrance and the poem ‘For the Fallen’. Mr Alan Weeks gave a short speech about the importance of keeping stories alive and remembering the sacrifice made by local men and women in serving their country in conflicts, then unveiled a commemorative plaque and declared the Peace Garden open.
Year 13 student, Lee, who participated in Wadebridge History Department’s first WWI Battlefields Tour in 2016, read an extract from Laurence Binyon’s poem ‘For the Fallen’. This was followed by a superb rendition of the Last Post by Year 8 bugler George and a two-minute silence. Year 8 students, who had returned from their Battlefields Tour the previous night, each placed a ceramic poppy on the ground in a poignant act of remembrance. George played Reveille and closing thanks were given by Tina Yardley. Year 11 student Grace closed proceedings with a beautiful song about peace.
Wadebridge School History Department would like to thank WREN, Wadebridge Tesco, Wadebridge Rotary Club, The Betjeman Centre, Drew Memorials and Chase Projects for their generosity in bringing this project to fruition, to thank all who attended the opening, and to thank staff and students for their ongoing support in ensuring that we keep the stories of these heroes alive and that we ‘Never Forget’."
