PEOPLE AND GARDENS CIC
President Nick Pickles and a small group from Wadebridge Rotary Club visited “People&Gardens” CIC (Community Interest Company), which was set up in 1997 by Ken and Lorraine Radford to enable people with learning disabilities or emotional impairments to be able to develop as individuals, to learn work and social skills and to have equality of choice and opportunity in the workplace.
The meeting was arranged so that a donation (£1200) following the success of “Wheels 2015” could be handed over to Ken and Lorraine to help them continue their work for “People & Gardens” CIC. As President Nick said: “We were amazed at the scope and diversity of this very active and wholly committed group of people – Rotary is proud to be able to make this modest donation to “People&Gardens”.
Ken and Lorraine understand, through their own experiences, that we should all work together to break down barriers, to educate and to support each other to make the world a better place for everyone and believe gardening can help you achieve a sense of well-being, satisfaction and self-worth. They firmly believe that gardening can help you feel good about yourself and that everyone has the right:
• to lead a fulfilling life
• to be treated with dignity and respect
• to make choices and decisions about their own life
• to be valued by others
Everyone who attends their project has an individual plan drawn up based on their aims and aspirations and sets out how those needs might be met. These individual plans are reviewed at least every six months.
As well as our ongoing projects of planting bulbs for Eden’s spring festival, planting and harvesting gourds for the autumn displays and growing vegetables that enable all participants to go home with produce People & Gardens are using the field to grow vegetables and fruit for ‘Veg Bags’.
