Wadebridge Rotary Club donates to Polzeath Marine Conservation Group
Independence at the Sea Shore
Wadebridge Rotarian, Tim Jones was welcomed to one of several start-up meetings, (this one held in the Oystercatcher pub in Polzeath), of Polzeath Marine Conservation Group (PMCG) and is photographed handing a cheque for £300 to Abby Crosby as part of Wadebridge Rotary Club's support of local community groups. This support is vital to PMCG which has just been formalised under a Constitution signed in December 2012 .
Polzeath is one of several Voluntary Marine Conservation Areas in Cornwall and was launched in 1995. Historically, information on this and the education of visitors, the local community and schools to the importance of marine conservation, together with the running of a significant number of relevant Events, was fully funded by Cornwall Council and Cornwall Wildlife Trust (CWT), all focussed in the Marine Centre in Polzeath.
Following the withdrawal of all funding by the Council and that of CWT from March 2013 the volunteers have banded together to set up PMCG to continue with important Marine Conservation work. There are significant start up, Marine Centre lease and running costs. The Marine Centre is manned entirely by local volunteers.
