Wadebridge Rotary Club was absolutely delighted to be asked to support four members of Skipton Rotary Club, Yorkshire, for their 'Riding For Recovery For A Brighter Future (LeJog)' who cycled 1000 miles (Lands End to John O'Groats) in just 12 days between 31st August and 11th September, raising money for ABF The Soldiers Charity, an organisation that gives support to brave young men & women who risk so much, just doing their job. This charity helps those in real need and has been doing so for over 66 years, but depends entirely on donations and goodwill to do this. Significantly, there has been a 30% rise in applications over the past 2 years from 'Service' Personnel who have taken part in the various 'conflicts' and whilst this is now costing £7 million a year, it is anticipated that demand will reach £14 million per annum by 2015.
Skipton Club contacted local Rotary Clubs along their route and three members of Wadebridge Rotary Club, Tim Lunt, Clive Robinson and Keith Snelling, offered much needed bed & breakfast facilities for the night. Tim Jones provided the 'meet & greet' service up at the Show Ground and Trevor Wiltshire offered his services as local 'Cycling Advisor'; well he has both the Lycra and the knees.
Skipton Leader, Kevin Wharton said on the Team's blog: "Thanks for all the good wishes from everyone along the way, with a super welcome from the Rotary Club of Wadebridge, at the Royal Cornwall Showground - our thanks to them. Wonderful scenery on the route. It was a ride of 2 halves; we got a bit lost this afternoon and endured some big hills (our local Wadebridge hosts called one 'a helluva hill' (sounds like West Hill!). Enjoyed lunch & tea stops; a BIG thank you to all who supplied food."
On Tuesday 11 September the four Team Skipton riders arrived in John O'Groats as planned, having attended their Club Meeting in Skipton on their journey - what a brilliant thing to do during an OLYMPIC and DIAMOND JUBILEE year. Wadebridge Rotary Club salutes them and is proud to have played some small part in this great venture.
