What a brilliant Junior Speaks at Shaldon Primary School
Each year Teignmouth Rotary Club holds ‘Junior Speak’ competitions in several primary schools in the area. Rotarians work with the schools to judge pupils’ presentations on a wide range of topics that the pupils have researched and developed. After heats are held in each school year the finalist present to family, friends and the Rotarian judges. In the most recent round the final competition of the school year was held at Shaldon Primary School.
What an exciting event it proved to be, almost impossible to select the winners, the standard was so high. The school hall was full to capacity and all guests and judges were entertained, informed and impressed by pupils from years 5 and 6.
We heard young people’s perspectives on important national topics such as climate change, electric cars, the importance of reading and ‘what adults should know about Fortnite’; we discovered new facts about Harry Potter, space travel, Greek mythology, Nors mythology and the solar system; and as well as finding out more about creatures such as Dartmoor ponies, sharks and dogs, we were entertained with totally new facts about the tiny Axolotis and the giant Capybaras- Who knew the capybara was so friendly! The final presentation and overall winner was a very interesting and personal talk on the Jewish religion initiation ceremony for girls, the Bat Mitzvar.(The Bar Mitzvah is the ceremony for boys).
All the judges commended the exceptionally high standard of research and delivery. The children, their parents and teachers must be so proud of their achievement. Teignmouth Rotarians thank all the pupils who took part in Junior Speak 2024 and wish them every success in their future; they certainly deserve it. We all look forward to learning a lot through the children’s presentations this year.
