The Rotary Club of Teignmouth has been working with the local community for over 90 years.
Here' s our president handing a cheque for £310 to Lou Bagnall for Teign Heritage Museum, and a cheque for £100 to Julia Street for the Alice Cross center. The money was raised at a quiz evening in the Alice Cross. Also (2024)president Nicola making sure we stay on the right side of the law.
The pandemic. 20/21 was a challenging year because we had been restricted by lockdowns due to COVID. We had been unable to meet in person throughout the year and had been unable to stage many of our usual fund-raising activities. Nonetheless thanks to Zoom and some imaginative ideas we were able to do a lot more than seemed likely when the pandemic first struck.
The Club had met by Zoom on Wednesday evenings throughout the year. As well as the monthly business meetings we held
-several quiz and games evenings
-two Murder Mystery evenings
-two joint meetings with the Rotary Club of Singapore (with 50 attending)
-talks by guest speakers about Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Iceland, girl guiding, how a local school faced up to the challenges of COVID and the life of a local musician who worked on cruise ships.
-some My Job Talks by members of the Club.
-a wine tasting evening.
-A fish and chip evening to see the new benches donated to The Orchard in Eastcliff(Mules) Park
We held a Barbecue at Homeyards Botanical Gardens in July.
We arranged for a local rugby commentator to speak to us at our first meeting in September.
The Club agreed that Rowcroft Hospice would be the charity which we should support. They needed to fund the purchase of new beds for their patients as the contract for their existing beds had expired.
We were able to raise £6481.20 to buy 4 new beds. The money was raised by-
-Club members donating £3581.20 being money saved as a result of not meeting for weekly meals.
-Three other local Rotary Clubs joining in with this project and contributing £2100.
-A Rotary District grant of £800.
The Club contributed £500 to the Rotary District Appeal to help with the response to COVID in India.
We were not able to hold our usual fund-raising activities including Christmas collections at local supermarkets and our annual Picnic in the Marquee. However, the Committee raised money by
-holding a Halloween party in a garden raising approx. £100.
-collecting in the Town for Children in Need-raising £1061.
-taking Santa and sleigh along roads of the Town, raising £2692, £500 of which went to Devon Young Carers.
-dressing as Easter Bunnies and collecting in the Town a net sum of £658.
-assisting with a collection for Marie Curie in the Town, raising approx.£316 in one day.
-collected 7 laptops from members for use by local children
-arranged a printing service for local people who do not have access to a printer.
We were restricted by lockdown measures in what we could do this year. In particular we could not engage with local schools to the extent we do in normal times. However we
-provided benches costing £244 to the local Roman Catholic Primary School
-contributed £250 towards a project to build a pond at another local Primary school
-supplied 6 toy money boxes for Kidsout at a cost of £150
-arranged the speakers by a girl guide leader and a deputy head teacher mentioned above.
-arranged a Youth Speaks at a local school for July.
-organised a youth photography competition.
-started research into a young Environmentalist competition.
