Lifeboat Day was held on a different day this year, due to work taking place in the boathouse for the new lifeboat which will arrive in November.
Saturday was a bit worrying as it is a day of major changeover by visitors. This was compounded by the weather being less than helpfull.
Despite the problems, the Rotary Club did their bit for the RNLI running a barbeque on the harbour front. From the proceeds of the barbeque the club gave a donation of £800 to RNLI and a good friendly day was had by all.
St Ives RNLI will be the first station in Cornwall to receive the Shannon class lifeboat which is powered by water jets and capable of 25 knots.
The new equipment will allow faster and more efficient launching and recovering of the lifeboat than the current Mersey class lifeboat system and will enable volunteer crews to reach people in need even faster than before.
The Shannon is the most agile boat in the fleet which not only allows it to reach casualties faster but also improves the safety for RNLI volunteer crews with its shock-absorbing seats and integrated management and control systems.
The water jets will increase manoeuvrability and enable more efficient sea rescues by allowing crews to operate in shallow waters.
