Golowan Community Interest Company

Mike Ward and Alan Shepherd outlined how Penzance’s cultural profile has evolved, the vital role of Golowan CIC, and the organisation’s recent challenges and opportunities as it secures new premises and seeks support to sustain its work

Mike Ward gave a brief background talk on the change in profile and prosperity of Penzance over the last 30 years and the importance of the Golowan CIC to the culture of the area.

Alan Shepherd Director Golowan CIC covered three main areas in his presentation. The Golowan CIC had recently had to move out of their previous accommodation following a change of ownership of their original building. The identification of alternative premises had required significant effort and funding from different parties.

It was pleasing to hear that the Golowan CIC had recently completed the purchase from Cornwall Council, of a property next to St John’s Hall, Penzance which would provide both office accommodation as well as storage space for the various groups and projects which needed Golowan CIC support.

However, the accommodation move had required a significant use of resources and Golowan CIC would welcome support on both an individual and organisational basis to help the group remain sustainable. Golowan CIC had been appointed by Penzance Council to run the Golowan Festival until 2027 as the traditional community midsummer event.

The Penzance culture offer including Mazey Day is very positive with the festival and other celebrations attracting a high level of community support, wide engagement with schools and voluntary groups. Golowan CIC is integral to the continuing development of the Penzance culture offer. The next Galowon Festival is19 to 28 June 2026.

Pz Rotary members asked a number of questions for clarification as well as expressing support for the work of the Golowan CIC. The Steward Barbara Kirk proposed the formal thanks.

Finally, the President indicated that any request for financial support from Golowan CIC  would be formally processed by the Pz Rotary upon receipt of an application.
