In a memorable culinary event held at Penwith College in Penzance, students from Cape Cornwall and Humphry Davy schools once came together to showcase their gastronomic talents in the Rotary Young Chef of the Year competition.

Organised by Rotarian Di Hickman and Emma Kelly of Penwith College, the contest brought together eight aspiring chefs - four from each school - who competed under the watchful eyes of esteemed local judges: Stewart Eddy of the Victoria Inn in Perranuthnoe, Kevin Montague from The Beach in Sennen, and Bruce Rennie of the Gurnards Head.

Among the standout moments of the day was the winning dish prepared by 16-year-old Jack Etheridge, whose Thai Massaman Curry impressed the judges and earned him the top honour. Jack’s culinary journey didn’t end there; his victory propelled him to success in the District Final and secured him a coveted spot in the Regional 5 Final.

The competition was part of Rotary’s long-standing commitment to youth development, offering young people opportunities to build confidence, refine practical skills, and engage with broader global issues. Events like these have historically served as a platform for students to connect with peers, learn from professionals, and experience the joy of shared achievement—all under the guidance of dedicated Rotarians.

Looking back, the Young Chef contest remains a shining example of how community-driven initiatives can inspire and empower the next generation.
