Rotary In Action - Community Service

Serving our local community

A wide range of community activities are undertaken by our members, some of which are detailed on the pages of this site.

New members are always sought, because with new members come new ideas for new projects to run alongside our existing ones.

When the Rotary Club of Penzance heard about the proposal to plant trees at a site near Sainsbury’s, the Club decided that it would like to be involved. Rotary International has been encouraging Rotary Clubs throughout the world to plant trees so this was an ideal opportunity for the Penzance Club to become involved.

Eight of our members assisted with the planting of 100 trees which we hope will grow to form a barrier between Sainsbury’s and Gulval Churchtown. The planting out of this site is long overdue. Our Club has also agreed to provide a pedestrian gate to the site to allow easy access.

The Club’s thanks go to John Moreland - Landscape Architect, for coordinating this project’.

Notes: The site between Sainsbury’s and Jelbert Way is owned by Cornwall County Council. Penzance Town Council had access to a supply of sapling trees but nowhere to plant them. Landscape Architect John Moreland, a resident of Penzance, drew this project together and, two years after the idea had first emerged, received a boost in the form of support and assistance from both the Causewayhead Traders Association and The Rotary Club of Penzance.

Rotary International has around 1.2 million members worldwide. - The R.I. President, concerned by the problems of environmental degradation and climate change, had challenged every Rotary Club to plant a tree for each of its members – this would provide a total environmental benefit to the planet of 1.2 million new trees
