It was one of the hottest evenings West Cornwall has produced in living memory but that didn’t stop a brave band of Rotarians, relatives and ringers from descending on Country Skittles for an evening of nine‑pin glory.
Across the four lanes, a dazzling variety of bowling styles emerged. Some players opted for the classic straight down the middle approach. Others preferred the more interpretive “sideways shuffle”. A few even trialled the bold “close your eyes and hope for the best”.
The gutters, meanwhile, enjoyed unprecedented popularity. They received more attention than the pins themselves, becoming the evening’s most‑visited part of the lanes.
Despite clear evidence that their throws had entered into a long‑term disagreement with the laws of aim and accuracy, the winning team of Zena, Simon, Nigel and his Grandson walked away with the prize. Their victory was narrow, their technique occasionally baffling, but their triumph undeniable.
All ages, genders and skill levels were represented, proving once again that skittles is the great equaliser. Whether you bowl like a seasoned pro or like someone trying to roll a watermelon uphill, there’s room for everyone.
Chris - the lone non‑playing scorer took his role very seriously, tracking every pin, wobble and questionable throw with the calm authority of someone who knew the rest of us had no idea what was going on.
It took some players quite some time to understand how the scoring worked. Some never fully did. But in true Rotary spirit, no one checked the scorecards anyway, so the results stand forever unquestioned.
By the end of the night, all teams finished with very close results, which either proves remarkable balance in skill… or remarkable balance in confusion.
After the bowling came the meal - a civilised affair, except for the moment Hugh discovered his pre‑ordered fish pie was unavailable. In a heroic act of self‑sacrifice, he took one for the team and accepted an over‑ordered Caesar salad. A lesser man would have rioted.
Meanwhile, one particularly cheeky table slipped in a dessert order without alerting the rest. Everyone else watched them eat with the wounded dignity of people who definitely would have ordered one too.
Despite the heat, the questionable bowling physics, the salad‑based tragedy and the dessert‑related betrayal, it was a brilliant evening of social fun - the kind of night that reminds everyone why these gatherings matter.
Country Skittles may never be the same again!
