Shelter Boots!

We recently welcomed Dave Foster from the Evesham Vale Rotary Club, who shared his inspiring mission to walk 700 miles in support of ShelterBox disaster relief. His £20,000 fundraising mission for ShelterBox left a strong impression on us all.

A dedicated Rotarian and ShelterBox advocate is embarking on a coast‑to‑border fundraiser - walking approximately 700 miles from Land’s End to the Scottish border - to raise £20,000 for ShelterBox, the disaster relief charity providing emergency shelter and essential household supplies to families affected by disaster.

After successfully raising over £10,000 during a 425‑mile walk in 2023, Dave Foster will begin a new challenge starting on 9 May: a planned 700‑mile trek across England to just north of Berwick‑upon‑Tweed. The trek will take roughly 53 days, averaging about 13 miles and 1,400 feet of ascent per day. Due to likely detours and path conditions, the total distance may reach approximately 800 miles.

This fundraiser is supported by local Rotary clubs and community volunteers. Early legs of the route include visits to Rotary clubs and a scheduled stop at ShelterBox’s headquarters. Accommodation will be provided by friends and Rotary members along the route, with initial day‑to‑day support from a designated driver and Rotary transport assistance further along.

“People really respond when they hear about ShelterBox and the challenge,” said Dave in his talk to the club. “I’m humbled by the support so far - more than £8,500 raised before the first step - and I'm determined to do this for families who need emergency shelter after disaster.”

The Impact:
  • Fundraising target: £20,000

  • Estimated ShelterBoxes supported: approximately 33 (based on an average cost of £600 per ShelterBox)

  • Funds will support emergency shelter and essential household items for families displaced by disaster worldwide.

Background:

Dave first became involved in ShelterBox fundraising through local Rotary activities - starting with small club events and creative projects such as a 40‑mile Norfolk walk and the “ShelterBoat” river events. The combination of community engagement and demanding physical challenges has proven effective in raising awareness and donations for ShelterBox.

How to support:

  • Donate: www.shelterboots.uk

  • Share: Follow and share updates across social media and community networks

  • Host or support: Local Rotary clubs and community groups along the route are invited to host meet‑ups, provide accommodation, or help publicise events
