Mary Burden writes:
I decided to do something positive to help the humanitarian response in Ukraine by driving a truck to Ukraine filled with sleeping bags warm coats, boots, a generator and many other aid items. The truck was bought by Bishops Waltham Rotary Club and half filled by them, with the other half filled by Dartmouth Rotary. I joined a convoy of trucks organised by a charity called P4P. The main part of the drive was covered in about twenty hours and although very tiring was a lot better than expected. The border crossing into Ukraine was made in convoy with 39 other vehicles, mainly pickups, all organised by P4P. From the border to Lviv was a bit of an adrenaline rush, we drove with our hazard lights on all the way led and followed by police vehicles with blue lights flashing. The reality of the situation in Ukraine became very obvious very quickly, bomb shelters, sandbags, windows boarded up and worst of all the new cemetery for soldiers that had been killed and I was only in the western part of Ukraine nowhere near the front line. The trucks were handed over to the military to be taken to eastern Ukraine where they could be used for humanitarian aid.
Currently, Dartmouth Rotary is supporting Ukraine via Shelterbox, the DEC, and Physionet.
Shelterbox is a UK charity that responds to disasters and provides supplies that are relevant to the need at the time. As temperatures in these areas drop well below freezing at night, ShelterBox will supply items like blankets, mattresses, winter clothes, and heaters.
The DEC brings together 15 leading UK aid charities to raise funds quickly and efficiently at times of crisis overseas. DEC charities and their local partners are in Ukraine and in neighbouring countries providing food, water, shelter, and medical assistance. As people are forced to leave their homes, and families are separated – you can help with a donation to Shelterbox or the DEC through Rotary.
Physionet is a national charity working throughout the UK operating solely with a network of enthusiastic volunteers who assist with the identification, collection, repair, and packing of equipment before it is shipped, usually in 40 ft shipping containers, to countries around the world.
