A PASSPORT TO THE FUTURE
The speaker last Wednesday at our weekly meeting was Muriel Thomson who gave us an update on some of the children her fundraising efforts throughout the North East has helped with educational support over the years. It is 20 years since Muriel first visited the St Joseph’s Social Service Centre, a small orphanage on the outskirts of Chennai in India. She went as a volunteer helping the children for a month back in 2006. The centre was originally set up in 1984 by Sister Bakkiam, a Franciscan Nun.
On returning from that first visit, Muriel set abut trying to raise funds to pay for education for the children. She was supported in getting this off the ground in the north east by the late Gerry Parker, an infectiously enthusiastic Stonehaven Rotarian. Stonehaven Rotary Club has supported this project with an annual donation since the start and we continue to do so. She reflected on the past years and her involvement with the centre and the respect that all the locals had for Sister Bakkiam.
Many of the children Muriel spoke to us about have gone on to gain degrees and all have found employment and help support their families.
