Rotary Provides New Clothing for Kind Bay Initiative

Recently President John Tristram of Rhos-on-Sea Rotary presented a range of new clothing to the Kind Bay Initiative in Colwyn Bay. The Kind Bay Initiative is a non-profit organisation based in Colwyn Bay, dedicated to assisting the homeless, individuals with mental health issues and vulnerable people.

Rhos-on-Sea Rotary has supported KBI for several years.

The clothing, sourced by Rotarian Geoff Price and his wife Kay from local stores, includes hoodies, jogging bottoms, socks, and underwear, with a focus on providing a variety of sizes for both men and women.

President John stated, "We are delighted to support this worthwhile enterprise, which makes a significant difference to those in need in our area."

 

 

Rhos on Sea Rotary Raises £200 for Marie Curie Charity

Rotarians from Rhos on Sea recently raised £200 in support of Marie Curie, a charity dedicated to providing end-of-life care, at Morrisons in the Colwyn Bay Centre.

The funds will help Marie Curie continue its vital work in easing pain, preserving dignity, and supporting families during some of life’s most challenging moments.

Marie Curie’s mission is simple yet profound: “Whatever the illness, we’re with you to the end. We care when there is no cure. We’ll ease your pain, protect your dignity, and support the people you love – putting you first.”

A special thanks goes to Vicky Hardy, Senior Community Fundraiser for Wales, for organising the display equipment, and to both Morrisons and the Colwyn Centre for their continued support of this meaningful cause.

Rhos-on-Sea Rotary Raises £450 for Wales Air Ambulance

On Thursday morning, Rhos-on-Sea Rotary President John Tristram presented a cheque for £450 to Rosie Day from Wales Air Ambulance.

The donation was raised during a collection at Tesco Llandudno last month, thanks to the generosity of shoppers and the continuing support of Tesco.

The Wales Air Ambulance is a life-saving charity providing critical care across Wales 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Their highly skilled crews bring emergency medical treatment directly to those in urgent need, often in remote or hard-to-reach locations, giving patients the best possible chance of survival and recovery.

President John Tristram thanked everyone involved, saying:

“We’re proud to support such an essential service that makes a real difference to lives across Wales. Every donation helps keep this life-saving charity in the air.”

Rotarians enjoy Crazy Golf at the Rhos Fynach

 

Rhos on Sea Rotarians took on a sporting challenge at their meeting this week.
They tackled the challenge of the new Crazy Golf course at the Rhos Fynach were they regularly hold their meetings.
Lots off twists and turns and a few whoops, turned into not a most challenging event.
The overall winner with a score of 27 (1 under par) was club Treasurer Cliff Large, who was awarded the prestigious Victor trophy
A fun evening topped off with an excellent buffet.

 

 

Rhos Rotary Appoints New President

At a recent meeting, John Tristram was appointed President of the Rotary Club of Rhos-on-Sea for the next twelve months.

John, who was born in Southport, moved to Rhos-on-Sea at the age of three. He worked internationally as a land surveyor until his retirement.

He is married to Eleri and has two daughters and five grandchildren. His interests include gardening, golf, walking, and enjoying an eclectic mix of music.

As Rotary President, John has chosen Macmillan Cancer Support as his nominated charity. He hopes to build on the valuable work the club has carried out in the local community over the past year.

Rotarian Rene Stevens was appointed President Elect.

Rotary presents illustrated dictionaries to school leavers

Rhos on Sea Rotary President, John Tristram, recently enjoyed a nostalgic visit to his old primary school, Ysgol Llandrillo yn Rhos.

During his visit, John presented Rotary illustrated dictionaries to 60 pupils in the school’s top class, who will soon be leaving to start their secondary education. The dictionaries are designed to broaden vocabulary, enhance language skills, and build children’s confidence, while fostering pride in owning their own book.

Speaking to the pupils gathered in the school hall, John shared fond memories of sitting in the same hall 60 years ago, recalling the happy times he spent at the school.

A particularly special moment was when John presented one of the dictionaries to his granddaughter, Aoife Lewis.

A similar presentation took place on Thursday at Ysgol Minafon in Mochdre, ensuring 16 more local school leavers benefit from this Rotary initiative.

 

 

Rotary Collection Raises £450 for Wales Air Ambulance

Rotarians from Rhos on Sea Rotary Club held a collection at Tesco Llandudno Junction on Saturday 5^th July in aid of Wales Air Ambulance, raising a total of £450 on the day.

Wales Air Ambulance is a nationwide charity providing critical care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to people suffering life-threatening or limb-threatening injuries and illnesses. Since its launch in 2001, the service has carried out over 50,000 missions – each one representing a unique and vital human story.

Club President John Tristram said:

“We are delighted to support Wales Air Ambulance, who do such a fantastic job saving lives in often difficult and remote locations.”

Rhos on Sea Rotary extends its sincere thanks to Tesco Llandudno Junction for their continued support in enabling collections such as this to take place.

 

Rhos-on-Sea Rotary Club Supports Successful Promenade Concert

Despite overcast skies, the evening air in Rhos-on-Sea was filled with music and laughter during a well-attended open-air concert by the Rydal Penrhos Community Wind Band. Conducted by Clive Wolfendale, the band performed a lively programme featuring favourites from musicals, stirring military marches, and a spirited sing-along that delighted the crowd.

Adding to the fun, members of the audience were invited to try their hand at conducting the band—an experience that brought smiles and laughter from young and old alike.

The event was well supported by members of the Rotary Club of Rhos-on-Sea, who were on hand collecting donations in aid of local good causes. The concert attracted visitors from across the UK and even the USA, many of whom joined enthusiastically in the singing.

Thanks to the generosity of attendees, the evening raised over £120 for community projects. It was, by all accounts, a thoroughly enjoyable event and a great example of music bringing people together.

Rotary Donates £1,500 to SSAFA Following VE80 Commemoration Concert

 

A special VE80 Day commemoration concert hosted by the Rotary culminated in a generous £1,500 donation to SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity.

 

The evening featured a rousing performance by the Rydal Penrhos Community Wind Band under the baton of Musical Director Clive Wolfendale. The programme delighted the audience with stirring military marches, beloved musical selections, and a nostalgic sing-along of wartime favourites The White Cliffs of Dover and We’ll Meet Again, capturing the enduring spirit of wartime Britain.

Gail Johnson, representing SSAFA North Wales, addressed the audience to express heartfelt thanks. She spoke about the charity’s vital work supporting Armed Forces personnel and veterans, both during their service and in civilian life.

A highlight of the evening was an intricate 1:70 scale diorama of the D-Day landings, crafted by retired Royal Engineer and Rotarian Chip Wood. The display, accompanied by historical documents and personal testimonies, offered a moving tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of those who served.

Rotary President Martyn Harvey expressed gratitude to all who contributed to the success of the event. “This concert was a heartfelt and fitting tribute to those who gave so much for their country,” he said.

Gardening team from Rhos on Sea Rotary spent an enjoyable time tidying up the garden at the St.Trillo chapel on the promenade. This is part of the club's commitment to help improve our environment for visitors and our local community.

Rotary Plant Stall Raises £400 for Kind Bay Initiative of Colwyn Bay.

On Saturday, 17th May, Rhos on Sea Rotary held its annual plant stall in the car park of the Rhos Fynach, located on the promenade in Rhos on Sea.

We are delighted to announce that the stall raised £400 in support of the Kind Bay Initiative of Colwyn Bay.

We were fortunate to have a large and varied selection of plants available, thanks to the generosity of the Colwyn Bay and District Horticultural Society, Morrisons, Asda and B&Q. Rotary members and friends also contributed by growing and donating their own plants, resulting in a vibrant and well-stocked display that was greatly appreciated by all who visited.

We extend our sincere thanks to the Rhos Fynach for kindly providing the use of their car park, and to the public for their generous support of our fundraising efforts.

Left over plants were donated to Ysgol Llandrillo to help stock their garden and were well received.

This event is a highlight of our calendar each year, made even more enjoyable this time by the welcome sunshine.

Rotarians Reflect on Memorable Visit to the Llandudno Home Front Museum

Members were treated to a most informative and nostalgic visit to the Llandudno Home Front Museum yesterday—a moving experience that evoked many memories of wartime Britain.

We were welcomed by the museum’s curator, Adrian, who spoke with great passion about his 40 years spent collecting World War II memorabilia. His lifelong interest began during his childhood on the Wirral, and has grown into a remarkable and deeply personal collection.

The museum, which opened its doors in 2000, is located in a building that once served as an auxiliary fire station during the war and later became a garage. Today, it stands as a tribute to the spirit and resilience of the Home Front.

I had the pleasure of visiting alongside two fellow Rotarians who were children during the war. Their recollections added great depth and poignancy to the visit. One story, shared by Shirley, stood out in particular. She recalled travelling to Coventry with her mother and sister to visit an aunt, and spending the night in a garden air raid shelter during the Blitz. The next morning, they emerged to find that the surrounding homes had been reduced to rubble. It was a stark reminder of the realities faced by so many.

The museum offers a comprehensive and authentic portrayal of everyday life before, during, and after the war, with hundreds of carefully curated artefacts on display. For those who lived through the era—or who simply wish to understand it better—it is a truly worthwhile and evocative destination.

A highly recommended visit for anyone with an interest in our shared history, particularly those with wartime memories of their own.

In addition, there will be a 1:72 scale diorama showing joint service operations from the Normandy landings forward to river crossings further inland which will assist in describing the actions during and following D-Day.

This model has been constructed by a former Royal Engineer who is a member of Rhos on Sea Rotary club. We hope local schools will take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about our nation’s history at this eventful time.

Rhos Rotary Brightens Kind Bay Initiative with Fresh Look

Rhos on Sea Rotarians have revitalized the Kind Bay Initiative’s premises on Sea View Road, Colwyn Bay, with a new, eye-catching sign and a fresh coat of paint. The sign, designed and painted by Rotarian Chip Wood, now proudly adorns the front of the building, while Rotarians Graham Jones, Wyn Jones, and Cliff Large transformed the door and window frames with their painting skills. This makeover provides a warm and welcoming entrance for the charity, which supports vulnerable individuals in the community.

Rhos Rotary celebrates St. David’s Day

Rhos Rotarians and friends gathered recently to celebrate St. David’s Day or  Dydd Dewi Sant. An excellent dinner at the Rhos Fynach was followed by an account of the history of St. David and community singing. accompanied by local harpist Catrin.

“We’ll keep a Welcome” was followed by “Calon Lan” and “Cwm Rhondda”. The evening was rounded off by singing  “Mae Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau” the Welsh National Anthem.

Thanks go to President Elect John Tristram for organising a most enjoyable event.

 

 

Rhos on Sea Rotarian Judy Barnard recently visited Fuengirola and made contact with members of D 2203 Rotary Club of Mihas Fuengirola .

Unfortunately, there was no meeting whilst she was there but the photo shows Judy  presenting our club banner, when she met for lunch on the coast with President Elect Andy Wheaton and his wife Sharon, who is also a very active member of the Rotary Club of Mihas Feungirola .

Our club banner was presented to the club at a later meeting. I understand that they would welcome visitors if any members are in the vicinity."

Councillor Ricki Owen, Mayor of the Bay of Colwyn Town Council, recently presented the Ruth Cavill Bowl to the Rotary Club of Rhos on Sea. The bowl is awarded by the Colwyn in Bloom committee to groups or individuals who endeavor to make the community a better place to live in. It was unanimously awarded to the Rotary Club of Rhos on Sea.

Rhos on Sea Rotary raise £720 to help to eradicate Polio

A recent collection held at the Colwyn Centre raised £240 towards Polio plus campaign.

The Bill Gates Foundation will double the amount we raised making it £720.

We are most grateful for the generous donations made by the public. Our thanks also go to the Colwyn Centre for allowing us to collect .

Some facts about the Rotary Polio Plus Campaign

Rotary has helped immunise 2.5 billion children globally since 1985.

Polio mainly affects children under the age of 5.

In 1985, when Rotary began its pledge, there were 125 polio endemic countries. In recent years there were just two, Pakistan and Afghanistan. This year polio was detected among the refugees in Gaza and a great effort was made to ensure all the children were immunised. It costs just 20p to protect a child with a life changing polio vaccine.

Our goal is to raise funds to continue Rotary’s key humanitarian priority of totally ridding the world from polio, a terrible, paralysing disease that can kill or severely disable children. By taking part in Get Moving to End Polio, you are making a difference to the lives of millions of children.

For over 30 years, Rotary has been working hard to rid the world of polio. Tremendous progress has been made but with over 400 million children receiving around 2 billion doses of polio vaccine we need your help to make history by ending polio everywhere now and forever.

Until polio is totally eradicated, every child is at risk of this highly infectious, potentially life-threatening and paralysing disease.

There is no cure for polio but there is a safe and effective vaccine. We continue to give around 2 billion doses of vaccine annually to 450 million children worldwide.

If polio is not eradicated, we could see as many as 200,000 new cases across the world within 10 years.

When the world is declared polio free, it will be just the second human disease ever to be eradicated, after smallpox.

Rotarians support Ukrainian Scouts based at Llysfaen

 

 

Following their recent yard sale, the Rotarians of Rhos on Sea found they had a number of tents, donated by members  which had not been sold.

 

Rotarian Roy Whittington, who is also Conwy District Scout Vice President, was aware of a Ukrainian Scout group who have held an annual camp in Llysfaen since 1947.

 

The group is part of PLAST a worldwide Ukrainian Scouting Organisation with groups throughout the UK.

 

Rotarian Roy Whittington, accompanied by Rotarian Rene Stevens, another former scout from the Netherlands, visited the camp site recently and presented a number of tents to the group.

 

Over 170 scouts from the Ukraine were attending the camp,  many of whom have moved to UK following the outbreak of war in their country.

 

Whilst they were there a church service was being for the scouts, conducted by Protopresbyter Bohdan Matwijczuk, Head of the Ukrainian

 

Orthodox Church in Great Britain

 

 

 

Roy said ” I was delighted to make contact with this scout group and provide some equipment which may be of use to them over future years.

 

We will  continue our support for the people of Ukraine through our International donations”

Supporting Men's Shed Colwyn Bay and Tools with a Mission

 

Following on from our recent Yard Sale there were a number of tools left over.

 

Rotarians Cliff Large and John Tristram delivered them to Men’s Shed in Colwyn Bay. They will either clean them up and use them or give them to Tools With A Mission who take unused and rusty tools and turn them into useful tool kits and send them to Africa to help people set up their own businesses and become self reliant.

 

 

 

Wales in Bloom competition Judges visit Diana garden

Rhos on Sea Rotary members joined judges from the Wales in Bloom competition at the Princess Diana memorial garden in the village.

The club carries out regular maintenance on the garden to enable visitors and local residents to enjoy a quiet spot away from the cares of the day.

Rhos Rotary Plant Stall raises £700 for Dementia UK

 

On Saturday Rhos on Sea Rotary held a Plant Stall in the car park of the Rhos Fynach, Rhos on Sea in aid of Dementia UK.

Glorious weather ensured a busy turnover on plants generously provided by B & Q, Llandudno, Morrisons, Colwyn Bay and the Colwyn Bay Horticultural Society.

We are most grateful once again for the support of Justin and the staff of the Rhos Fynach in allowing us to use their car park and for providing tables to allow us to display the plants

Members had also played their part by bringing on a selection of plants at home.

Rotary refurbishes St. Trillo chapel chairs

 

Rhos on Sea Rotary club members Wyn Jones and Cliff Large have been refurbishing the chairs from the St. Trillo chapel on Rhos on Sea promenade.

The club regularly carry out garden maintenance at the chapel as part of our community service commitment.

Rotary President Gavin Davies said" We are always delighted to play our part in preserving such an important part of our local history".

Members recently collected at Tesco Llandudno Junction and Morrisons in the Colwyn Centre for Marie Curie Cancer Charity. Over £460 was raised for this very worthwhile cause

 

Rhos Rotary supports Conwy Food Bank

Rhos Rotary members have collected over £200 worth food items for Conwy Food Bank over the least few weeks.

Today a small team delivered the food to the food bank at the Lighthouse Church Llandudno.

President Gavin Davies,said,” We were delighted to support this worthwhile enterprise and do our bit for those in need in these difficult times.”

 

 

Army Cadets recount South African adventure

At a recent meeting of the Rhos on Sea Rotary Club, members of the Colwyn Bay detachment of the Army Cadet Force retold their adventures taking part in an expedition to the Kwa-Zulu Natal region of South Africa last year. 

The object of the expedition was to follow the Zulu trail on foot and by boat, taking in the battlefields at Isamdlwaha and Rourke's Drift.

The event had been part-funded by the Rotary club but was mainly funded by the cadets own efforts.

Following an introduction by Major John Baxendale an explanation of the logistics organising a large group of cadets from the whole of Wales was provided by 2Lt. Andrew Orme.

Andrew described their journey to South Africa, including a number of small “happenings”, up to when the group arrived via Johannesburg at a giraffe game reserve which was to be their initial base. The team then split up into those who were walking and those who were travelling by boat.

Ex L/Cpl Bryn Baxter described in great detail their trek along the Zulu trail and the need to adapt to local conditions with limited water and shelter. Their guides were able to explain the layout of the battle fields and recount more of the history of events.

They visited a Zulu school and were very impressed by the enthusiasm of the pupils despite the limited equipment and facilities at the school.

L/Cpl Yori Maguire-Evans was part of the section which canoed along the Tugela river, sleeping in the open air on the banks of the river. Yori was responsible for much of the cooking. Both he and Andrew were impressed by the quiet of their surroundings except for the noises of the animals.

All agreed their memories of this adventure would stay with them for a lifetime.
 

Rhos on Sea Rotarians Wyn Jones, Cliff Large  and Phil Joy have today been carrying out repairs to a bench in the park behind the Rhos Fynach.

The club has a regular programme of carrying out repairs to benches locally and also the maintenance of the Princess Diana Memorial Garden in the village

Tribute To John Morris Roberts

Past President and Club Secretary

A large congregation gathered at the Colwyn Bay Crematorium on Monday 20th November 2023 to pay their respects to Rotarian John Morris Roberts PHF.

John was born in Chester in 1944 and was educated at the Royal Masonic School for Boys at Bushey in Hertfordshire. 

He later attended catering college in Blackpool where he was to meet his wife Kath

Whilst there he honed his skills as a toastmaster.

Later he moved to work at Cartrefle College in Wrexham, to a family bakers in Altrincham and in 1969 to Pilkington's in St. Asaph as catering manager.

Whilst there John and Kath settled in Llanddulas, which was to remain their family home. Daughters Claire, Jo, Sally and Jenny grew up in Llanddulas

John then took charge of the Cheshire County Council Menai Centre then finally moving to become Town Clerk for the new Bay of Colwyn Town Council.

He tackled this job with his usual great gusto and is particularly remembered for organising the annual bonfire night fireworks display at Eirias Park

John was a well respected member of the local magistrates bench for 15 years.

In his younger days John was an active player for Colwyn Bay Rugby Club, later becoming Chairman and President.

In 1999 John joined the newly formed Rotary Club of Rhos on Sea,  becoming President and for many years a very active Club Secretary.

John was always first to volunteer to take part in any new project the club took on from setting up for the Tree of Lights ceremony to bench painting on the promenade and in the park.

Whatever John did he had a smile on his face and was always ready to make a real contribution to his local community.

A recent collection by the Rotary Club of Rhos on Sea, at Tesco Llandudno Junction, raised over £500 for the Welsh Air Ambulance Service.
The Welsh Air Ambulance Service, which has a base at Caernarfon Airport, covers North and Mid Wales and provides a rapid response throughout the area.
Wales Air Ambulance offers advanced critical care and is often described as a ‘Flying Emergency Department’. The on-board consultants and critical care practitioners are highly skilled and carry some of the most pioneering medical equipment in the world. They can deliver blood transfusions, administer anaesthesia and undertake emergency operations at the scene of the incident, before flying the patient directly to specialist care.
Rotary President Gavin Davies said, “ We are delighted to support the Air Ambulance, a vital service providing critical rapid response in times of need.”

Plant Stall raises over £500 for Macmillan Cancer Care

Yesterday's Rhos on Sea Rotary's Plant Stall raised over £500 for Macmillan Cancer Support. Many thanks to all of those who supported us. In particular thanks to the Rhos Fynach for allowing us to hold our plant sale on their car park.

Members have been carrying on with our programme of ensuring promenade benches are in good condition. Replacing  deteriorating woodwork on benches on the Cayley Promenade.

Rhos Rotary Fashion Show raises £1500 for Ty Gobaith Children's

Hospice

A fashion show held at Rhos on Sea Golf club on 21st April raised £1500 for Ty Gobaith.

This was the second fashion show organised by Rhos Rotary in aid of the children's hospice based in Conwy.

Thanks go to Sophie Reynolds of Elle-Kat who organised the show. Sian Turner of Rhos on Sea Golf Club for providing the venue, and Eric Avery for donating a microlight flight in the auction.

Rotary Tree of Lights
Many of your readers will be aware that the Rotary Club of Rhos on Sea carried out the Tree of Lights Ceremony over the Christmas period. We are very pleased to say that this year, to date, it has raised £26,245 (excluding tax gift aid), every penny of which has gone directly to St. David's Hospice to support them in the good work they do. A total of £386,000 has now been raised since we started the Tree of Lights Ceremony . I am writing to express our Club’s sincere appreciation to those who contributed and supported this very worthy cause. The satisfaction of knowing that our local St. David's Hospice has benefited through people’s amazing generosity helping terminally ill people, young and old alike who are in such need of support, along with their relatives and carers. I would also thank the Pioneer and the North Wales Weekly News for supporting Rotary in this venture. That support has been central to its success. I hasten to add that this is not just a fundraising event because equally importantly, it gives so many of us within our communities the opportunity to remember and commemorate loved ones at what can be a difficult time for many. Let us hope we can ensure the tree shines on the Cayley Promenade with special meaning again next December and hopefully for many years to come.

Rotary supports local Para Snow Sports group

On Saturday President of the Rotary Club of Rhos on Sea, Pauline Hogan, presented a cheque for £200 to the local Para Snow Sports Wales group at a gathering on the ski slope on the Great Orme, Llandudno.

The money had been raised following  Boxing Day and New Years Day dips Pauline had taken part in and sponsorship from Rotary club members.

Para Snow Sports provides access to skiing facilities using specially adapted equipment to enable people of all abilities to enjoy ski sports

 

 

       Conwy Food Bank  donation

Rhos on Sea members today visited Conwy Food Bank and handed over a cheque for £310 plus a variety of presents Santa had left behind in his grotto at the Rhos Fynach.

 

      Rotary Tree of Lights Returns

A large crowd gathered on the Cayley Promenade on Sunday 27th November to witness the Rotary Tree of Lights switch on.

This was the first time the public had been able to gather since 2019 due to the pandemic restrictions. The Tree of Lights is an opportunity for the public to remember loved ones and celebrate the coming of Christmas.

Dr. Lyndon Miles from St David's Hospice updated the crowd on new developments and the continuing work of the hospice

Rotary President Pauline Hogan said, “We were so pleased to invite the public to witness the switch on this year following such difficult times. All proceeds from the Tree of Lights will go to support the fantastic work of St. David's Hospice in Llandudno.”

The lights were switched on by the Mayor of the Bay of Colwyn Cllr Colin Matthews.

An address and the blessing was given by Mr. Owen Morris 

 

Our grateful thanks go to the choir, Cor Meibion Colwyn and Beulah Brass who led the crowd in carol singing.

The sterling efforts of Griffiths Construction, Specialist Engineering Technical Services, Absolute Sounds, Conwy County Borough Council, Bay of Colwyn Town Council and the staff of St. David's Hospice made the whole event possible. We are most grateful for their continuing support.

23rd. Christmas for Rotary Tree of Lights

(Since its inception The Tree of Lights has raised over £365,000 for Hospice funds)

Members of The Rotary Club of Rhos-on-Sea with the support of St. David’s Hospice have carried out the Tree of Lights on the Cayley Promenade since Christmas 1999/2000.  This December will see the 23rd. birthday of the event supporting our local St. David's Hospice, Llandudno, as we have done since the beginning. The tree will once again shine giving many within our local communities and well beyond the opportunity to celebrate or commemorate the lives of loved ones or to celebrate a special occasion or other meaningful event and at the same time supporting this very worthy cause.

Because of the Covid 19 restrictions, our local Hospice has experienced very difficult times and sadly we have been unable to carry out our Switch On Ceremony for the past three years as a Rotary Club. The cancellation of fundraising and other supporting events has had an impact on the Hospice’s financial resources and they need our support now more than ever to help them carry out their vital work.  For example, costs of running the Hospice in 2021 was about £5 million but only 9% of that comes from the Local Health Board.  This leaves £4.5 million to be raised annually through voluntary means such as the Tree of Lights.

It is fair to say that the Rotary Tree of Lights by now has become an annual feature and very much an integral part of Christmas for our local communities and also much further afield. The response to this annual appeal over the years has been overwhelming. Since it all started, over £365,000 has been donated to the Hospice. We are however well aware that this annual event represents much more than just fundraising.  Most of us have lost loved ones and our need to reflect and remember is so important. Setting aside time to commemorate brings a degree of comfort in concentrating our thoughts at what can be a difficult time of year for so many coming to terms with ongoing bereavement and loss. This has been that much more acute in the pandemic we have experienced. By dedicating a light to a loved one, we hope it helps to bring that comfort and peace in our daily busy lives.  St. David's Hospice are ever grateful for the support this brings and it is an important event in their calendar as indeed our own. Last Christmas, the tree was adorned with our recently acquired LED lights. They shine brighter than ever. This was made possible with the very kind sponsorship of the Rhyl Flats Offshore Wind Farm and also the support of the Conwy Voluntary Services Council, Dŵr Cymru and Colwyn Town Council. All this will hopefully enable the event to carry on for many years to come in support of this very worthy local cause.

It was disappointing in past years to have to cancel our traditional switch on ceremony. Without going to the finer details, this was in the main because of the pandemic situation and public safety is paramount. Whilst Covid remains, this year, once again, we are faced with a different situation in that extensive works on the sea front are ongoing with a two way traffic system on the Cayley Promenade.  Having regard to all this, in particular the fact there cannot be a road closure on the Cayley Promenade for this year, our Ceremony will be held on the main Promenade Road immediately below the Tree of Lights and within the enclosed Construction Site area with the very kind consent and support of the site Contractors,  Griffiths Construction and Conwy Council.

The lights will be illuminated during our ceremony as from 4.30 p.m. on Sunday, 27th. November, 2022 remaining lit throughout December. After the lights are switched on, a short video recording will also be available for viewing on the Rhos on Sea Rotary Club and St. David’s Hospice Websites along with their respective Facebook pages. Although the tree is not yet illuminated dedications can still be made from now on and right through until the end of December through the coupon in the Pioneer newspaper and North Wales Weekly News or by using the form from any Hospice Shop, or just by posting a plain letter quoting the ‘Tree of Lights’ to St. David's Hospice, Abbey Road, Llandudno. On-line donations can also very easily be made on the Hospice Website.

“Our ceremony this Christmas will be directly below our tree on the bottom main Promenade Road. Having to cancel our event was a  painful decision knowing that it means so much to so many. We are grateful to the Contractors, Griffiths Constructions and Conwy Council for their support of Rotary and St. David’s Hospice and in turn our community. The opportunity to remember our loved ones is so very important and dedicating a light at Christmas is a lovely way to do this commemorating those no longer with us.  Every penny donated will go to St. David’s Hospice supporting the vital work they do for all communities right throughout North West Wales.  They have been unable to hold as many fundraising activities because of Covid restrictions and they need our support more than ever.  Despite everything, we will certainly see our Rotary Tree of Lights shine proudly on the Cayley Promenade once more this year with special meaning for all.”

Rotary supports Para Snow Sports Wales

Rhos on Sea Rotary recently supported ParaSnowSports Wales, an organisation established to encourage less able people to enjoy winter sports.
The group is based at the ski slope on the Great Orme, Llandudno.
President Pauline of the Rotary Club of Rhos on Sea presented a cheque for £350 to the group at their meeting on Saturday. Pauline is a regular helper at their meetings.
The funds were raised at a collection at Tesco Llandudno Junction to whom we express our thanks for their continuing support.

 

Rotary Supports Macmillan Cancer Charities

President Pauline of the Rotary Club of Rhos on Sea recently presented a cheque for £300 to Macmillan Cancer Support at a Coffee Morning at Horeb Methodist Church Colwyn Bay. 

The donation was from a collection Rotary had recently made at Tesco Llandudno Junction.

The Coffee Morning enabled a total of just over £685 to be donated to Macmillan Cancer Support through the Conwy Christian Cancer Support Group under the leadership of Mr. Owen Morris.  This Group also recently presented a donation of £400 to this good cause.  

 

A PUNJABI PICNIC
The Rotary Club of Rhos-on-Sea recently spent a day coming to grips with the skills needed for survival when an eco disaster strikes.  Rotarian Chip Wood, who spent his early years in Jhelum, Pakistan, hosted a fundraising meal cooked outdoors to try and understand what the poor people of the flood hit areas of Pakistan and parts of Africa are currently having to endure.
Club members cooked a healthy variety of curried dishes, made their own chapattis and took part in practical tests involving making water filtration and purification devices from a pile of rubbish.  
Cooking on log fires using improvised cooking pans such as a half beer barrel and a satellite dish proved tricky but a terrific meal was produced and eaten with gusto to the surprise and delight of all!
A competition between teams to make water filters and small, fuel efficient ,stoves to purify dirty water so that it became drinkable produced some startling inventions and no small amount of hilarity!
Raffle and bar profits, added to donations from a great many of the 33 club members, raised £650 which has been sent to the Rotary charity organisation AQUABOX.  who are currently in the flood hit areas providing the most urgent need for water purification kits.
Club President Pauline Hogan said that she, and fellow Rotarians now had a much better understanding of the problems faced by people in flooded areas trying to survive with a minimum of assistance.

Rhos on Sea Rotary donates £435 to Marie Curie Charity

At a recent meeting of Rhos on Sea Rotary club Peter Hughes, a fellow Rotarian from the Rotary Club of Abergele, gave a presentation on the work of Marie Curie charity.

Peter, who is currently Chairman of the local Marie Curie committee, outlined the range of support services offered by the charity to those in end of life situations, from on-call nursing care to individual phone calls to assist patients with particular difficulties. A team of Marie Curie nurses are based at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, Bodelwyddan.

The charity tries to make sure as much as is practical that funds raised locally are used locally

On Saturday President Pauline Helped out at a Para Snow Sports Wales event on the Great Orme ski slope at Llandudno.

She met up with Oswestry Rotarian Dr. Stephen Walker, his wife Erika and son Michael, along with other members and volunteers to enjoy a great mornings skiing followed by a barbecue.

Rhos on Sea Rotary are holding a collection at Tesco, Llandudno Junction in aid of Para Snow Sports Wales and McMillan Cancer Support on Friday 22^nd and Saturday 23^rd July.

 

 

All change at the top for Rhos on Sea Rotary

 

Last night saw the handover from President Cliff Large to our new President Pauline Hogan.

Cliff had guided the club over the last two years throughout the pandemic.

He thanked the club for their support and reminded them of what they had achieved through difficult period. In particular the Tree of Lights which had raised over £80,000 for St. David's Hospice over the two years.

Pauline thanked the club for the support she had received to step forward as President. Her main focus this year was support for those who are less able.

Gavin Davies was welcomed as our President Elect.

Rhos on Sea Rotary Supports Ukrainian family now living in Rhos on Sea

 

 

In April, 2022, Rhos-on-Sea Rotary Club was successful in their application to Rotary District1180 for a grant of  £1,000 to support a family of Ukrainian refugees being hosted locally. A mother and her two daughters fled the war zone in the Kviv area whilst the father has had to remain in the country.

 

The much-needed funds were used to purchase school uniforms for the two children, shoes and learning materials. The money also allowed the purchase of two laptops which will greatly assist the children to catch up on their studies and  more effectively learn English. Both children have settled at a local Primary school and the family are extremely grateful for the assistance Rotary has provided.

Rotary Fashion Show for Ty Gobaith is a great success.

 

A fashion show organised by Rhos on Sea Rotary and local fashion stores raised over £1300 for Ty Gobaith Children's Hospice.

 

The show held on Friday at Colwyn Bay Cricket Club was attended by almost 100 guests.

 

A variety of models of all ages provided a dazzling array of up to date fashions.

 

Hosted by Sophie Reynolds the audience enjoyed a refreshing prosecco on arrival and an opportunity to win a fabulous array of prizes in an inclusive raffle.

 

Clothes featured were supplied by ElleKat and Ni+Mi with jewellery by Skylark Jewellery

 

A cheque for £1000 was presented to Beverly Bradley of Ty Gobaith Children's Hospice on the night and further donations are likely to be made when all expenses are calculated.

 

Rotary President Cliff Large, who introduced the show, said, “ So many people have worked hard to make this event a success. We are delighted to help this most worthwhile cause.”

Tree of Lights raises over £27500  for St. David's Hospice

 

Rhos on Sea Rotary Club would like to express the sincere appreciation of members for all the help and invaluable support once again received in supporting St. David’s Hospice with our annual Tree of Lights appeal.

It was with great regret we had to cancel our Switch On ceremony at the end of November but people’s safety and well being is paramount.

A little over three months ago our Club appealed for help with this year’s event and the public has so generously responded to support the Hospice. The total raised this year is £27,513.64p. which does not include Tax Gift Aid.

Every penny donated through this Rotary project has been donated to the Hospice. Through the Tree of Lights, so far, a total of over £361,000 has been raised for St. David’s Hospice and as a Rotary Club, we are delighted with that.

However, the main appreciation is to everyone who has supported this worthwhile cause over many years. We will be repeating it again next Christmas.

The Tree of Lights is not just about fundraising, equally importantly it enables people to remember loved ones and it gives us so much satisfaction knowing this has happened and helped people cope at what can be a difficult time..

We hear day to day about atrocities and strife in the world and in these difficult days of the Pandemic which has affected us all, good news often fails to hit the headlines. We hear so little about the good that is being done by ordinary people. Diolch am bob cefnogaeth unwaith eto.

 

Rhos on Sea Tree of Lights switching on ceremony goes virtual

 

 

In the light of the current events, Rhos on Sea Rotary Club and St David’s Hospice have had to make an extremely difficult decision about this year’s Tree of Light Switching on ceremony in Rhos on Sea.

 

It has been decided, for the safety of everyone involved, the switching on ceremony on Sunday 28th November will now take place virtually as it did in 2020.

 

The lights will still shine bright, loved ones remembered and the Tree will be lit beautifully at the end of November. The virtual ceremony can be enjoyed in the comfort of your own homes, in your own time, not only in North Wales but across the world.

 

It will be posted on the Hospice’s YouTube, Facebook pages and on the Hospice and Rotary websites. Rhos on Sea Rotary Club and St David’s Hospice are extremely sorry for any disappointment caused, and we hope to join you in person in 2022.

Rotary Spruces up Combermere Garden Benches

Rhos on Sea Rotarians have been repainting benches in Combermere Gardens on the Promenade at Rhos on Sea this morning.

The gardens are a popular spot for locals to enjoy the beautiful views across the Bay of Colwyn.

The club has carried a number of bench and garden refurbishments over the last few years as part of their Community Service efforts.

President Cliff Large said , “We really enjoy doing what we can to make Rhos a better place for locals and visitors alike.”

Rhos on Sea Rotary Club supporting the work of Shoe Aid UK.

 

 

Shoe Aid UK is a national charity that recycles and reuses shoes by collecting, sorting and redistributing them to the needy in both UK and across the world.

 

It is estimated that 3 million pairs of shoes go to landfill every year in UK

 

Next month Shoe Aid UK  are holding “Shoetember” and are requesting donations of serviceable and usable shoes. Childrens' shoes are particularly welcome but shoes of all types (including wellingtons ) can be reused.

 

Rhos on Sea Rotary members will be contacting family and friends over the next few weeks to hopefully make a positive contribution to the good work of this charity and benefit those in need.

 

If shoes have laces, please tie them together, those with buckles should be strapped together. If neither, tie them in pairs with string or an elastic band.

 

Pop them into a plastic bag to await collection.

Rotary donates clothing to local homeless charity

Rotarian Judy Barnard has co-ordinated a collection of clothing from Rhos on Sea Rotary Club members for clients of Hope Restored homeless charity based at the Lighthouse Community Church, Great Orme Road, Llandudno.

Rhos on Sea Rotary visits

Royal Welch Fusiliers Museum Caernarfon.

On Monday last members visited the Royal Welch Fusiliers Museum Caernarfon, based in Caernarfon Castle.

After battling with the technology in the Dockside car park we were entertained to a most interesting lecture on the history of the Royal Welch by former serving members of the Regiment, Merfyn Thomas and Keith Jones, Followed by a guided tour of the museum.

The museum houses battle honours and medals from the 17th century to modern times and has a huge array of uniforms, paintings and military paraphernalia, including 10 Victoria Crosses.

A real treasure house of our nation's history which is well worth a visit.

 

 

           Plant Stall in aid of the Alzheimer's Society

                                          Rotary Plant Stall raises over £700

A Plant Stall organised by the members of Rhos on Sea Rotary last Saturday raised over £700 for The Alzheimer's Society.

The stall was held in the car park of the Rhos Fynach on the Promenade at Rhos on Sea. Members had been busy over the last few weeks bringing on their plants despite the inclement weather.

A very generous donation of plants from B & Q Llandudno gave the stock we had to display a significant boost.

President Cliff Large said ,” Members have greatly enjoyed getting their plants ready for the sale and we have had a most rewarding day.

In particular we would to express our appreciation to the staff at the Rhos Fynach who have made this great result possible.”

Members carried a beach and gardens clean around the village today and met up with Colwyn Bay Rotary who were doing the same.

New Signs for Tree of Lights

We have recently acquired new signs for the Tree of Lights through the generosity of local sponsors.

The tree will be switched on Sunday 29th November at 1630. There will be no public ceremony this year due to the coronavirus epidemic. The ceremony will be shown on line.

Members of The Rotary Club of Rhos-on-Sea with the support of St. David’s Hospice have carried out the Tree of Lights on the Cayley Promenade since Christmas 1999/2000.  This December will see the 22nd birthday of the event in aid of St. David's Hospice, Llandudno. The tree will once again shine giving many within our local communities and well beyond the opportunity to celebrate or commemorate the lives of loved ones or to celebrate a special occasion or other meaningful event and at the same time supporting this very worthy cause.

Sadly this year, because of the Covid 19 restrictions, our local Hospice has experienced very difficult times. The cancellation of fundraising and other supporting events has had a severe impact on their financial resources and they need our support now more than ever to help them carry out their vital work.

It is fair to say that the Rotary Tree of Lights by now has become an annual feature and very much an integral part of Christmas for our local communities and also much further afield. The response to this annual appeal over the years has been overwhelming. Since it all started, over £291,000 has been donated to the Hospice. We are however well aware that this annual event represents much more than just fundraising.  Most of us have lost loved ones and the need to reflect and remember is so important.  In our busy daily lives, setting aside time to commemorate brings a degree of comfort in concentrating our thoughts at what can be a difficult time for many coming to terms with ongoing bereavement and loss.  By dedicating a light to a loved one, we hope it helps to bring that comfort and peace.  St. David's Hospice are ever grateful for the support this brings and it is an important event in their calendar.  Last Christmas, the tree was adorned with brand new LED lights. They shine brighter than ever. This was made possible with the very kind sponsorship of the Rhyl Flats Offshore Wind Farm and also the support of the Conwy Voluntary Services Council, Dŵr Cymru and Colwyn Town Council. All this will enable the event to carry on for many years to come.

IT IS WITH GREAT DISAPPOINTMENT WE ANNOUNCE THAT THIS YEAR THERE WILL BE NO TRADITIONAL CEREMONY TO LAUNCH THE EVENT ON THE CAYLEY PROMENADE. THIS IS BECAUSE OF THE COVID 19 SITUATION AND RELATED RESTRICTIONS.    SAFETY FOR ALL IS PARAMOUNT.

The lights however will be illuminated as from 4.30 p.m. on Sunday, 29th. November, 2020 remaining lit throughout December. As from this time, a short video recording of ‘Switch On’ Ceremony will be available for viewing on the Rhos on Sea Rotary Club and St. David’s Hospice Websites along with their respective Facebook pages. Although the tree is not yet illuminated dedications can still be made from now on and right through until the end of December through the coupon in the Pioneer newspaper or by using the form from any Hospice Shop, or just by posting a letter quoting the ‘Tree of Lights’ to St. David's Hospice Abbey Road, Llandudno. On-line donations can be made on the Hospice and Rhos on Sea Rotary Websites.

“It’s sad that we cannot hold our ceremony on the Cayley Promenade but we will not let Covid 19 stop us supporting St. David’s Hospice. The opportunity to remember our loved ones is very important and dedicating a light is a lovely way to do this during Christmas time commemorating those no longer with us. I hope it brings a degree of comfort and concentrate our thoughts in these unusual and difficult times. Every penny donated will go to the Hospice supporting the vital work they do for all communities right throughout North West Wales. I will update you on our progress. Despite this difficult time, we will see our Rotary Tree of Lights shine proudly on the Cayley Promenade once more this year with special meaning for all.

President welcomes new members

On Thursday 15th October President Cliff welcomed Judy Barnard and Ruth Coleman-Jones as our newest members of the club. Both have been regular visitors over the last few months and helped us with our bench painting and other projects. We welcome them to the wider family of Rotary

President Cliff was delighted to welcome a new member to the club at last night's meeting. Martyn Harvey is a retired Fire Officer who has already shown prowess in bench painting over the last few weeks. You are very welcome Martyn.

 

 

 

 

                 Sue's Arbour

 

The late Sue Williams was a member of Rhos-on-Sea Rotary Club and a true inspiration to everyone who met her and not just club members. One of many projects she was instrumental in achieving was the renovation of the Princess Diana memorial garden in the centre of Rhos. She, more than anyone else drove the project, converting what was an overgrown, derelict site into a pleasant, restful place which is enjoyed by people of all ages.

 

Sue lost her battle with cancer earlier this year causing great sadness and sorrow to all who knew her. The Rotary club in particular wanted to remember her in some tangible way and after much discussion they decided to honour her memory by placing her name on the arbour in the centre of the garden, a suitable honour for a much loved lady.

Refurbishing the benches on the Cayley Promenade
