Youth Speaks 2015-2016: junior competition

Once again, this year's competition was of a very high standard. The Devoran School hall was full of parents and supporters to hear seven teams take part. The first and second went forward to the Area heat in Penzance on 22 February..


In addition to the usual stalwarts, newcomers Truro Learning Academy took part in place of Truro School Prep. The Club is grateful to them all for making this another event to remember.  Club members who have never previously witnessed the competition continue to be impressed by the standards of thought and presentation the children unfailingly attain. The choice of topics (shown below) was wide-ranging, and each was handled informatively and with appropriate humour.

The winning team came from Truro High School for Girls. Each member of the team played a strong part, showing how important teamwork is in this event. Their topic, "Could I buy you a cigarette?", was treated both humorously and very seriously.

Second were Devoran School who spoke thoughtfully on the unusual theme, "Would you choose to celebrate Thanksgiving?"

Once again the Club is indebted to the judges (David Hughes of Anderson Lloyd LLP, Helen Sandle-Baker, and newcomer Lorraine Hobden) who found it hard to choose between the teams. As usual, David's adjudication and comments on each speaker were helpful and well received.

Special thanks are due to hosts Devoran School (who also provided refreshments during the event), and to the timekeepers and assistants from the Rotary Club.
