Rotary Club of Leven Young Citizen of the Year (Stuart Trophy) - Every year we receive amazing nominations for the Young Citizen of the Year Award from youth groups, schools and from members of the public, this year was no exception and every year and, like the head teacher position, any one of the nominated young people could take away the trophy.  The interview panel had a really difficult decision as to who deserves to be awarded the Stuart Trophy

However, decide we did, and for the first time in 30 years the judges made a joint award as they felt that both of these young people is an outstanding recipient for our Young Citizen of the Year and have demonstrated a true sense of community and citizenship.  Beth Milloy of Buckhaven High School and Amber Strachan of Kirkland High School are our joint 2016 Young Citizen of the Year.

Amber (alphabetical order) is energetic, enthusiastic and extremely hardworking.  She has a love of animals and volunteers at veterinary surgery and on her aunt’s farm.  She is a Platinum Active School Ambassador, one of only a handful in Fife and promotes physical activity and sport in the local cluster primary schools and in the planning and execution of many sports related events at Kirkland HS.  Amber also leads breakfast, lunch and after school gymnastics at local primary schools.

She is a qualified gymnastics coach and is a member of the Enigma Gymnastics club and has competed at national level and takes an active lead in looking after the younger members of the club.  Amber travelled to Sweden recently to enhance her coaching skills.

Amber is an active committee member of the Rose Queen Gala in Leven and regularly performs in, and choreographs school shows.

She is a Senior Buddy at school and uses her undoubted communication skills with empathy and understanding as she mentors some of the most challenging S1 pupils and spends time with them in the Support Centre.

Beth is also a Platinum Active Schools Ambassador and will be organising training sessions for potential Active Schools Ambassadors from across Fife.  In this role Beth coaches a variety of sports including handball and badminton at Autumn, Easter and Summer holiday camps and leads groups in terms of registration and supervision.

At school Beth coaches the junior basketball team every Monday and runs a dance class for the children in the school’s Additional Support Dept.  This helps enormously to build confidence and self-esteem for some of the most vulnerable in the school.

Beth volunteers every Saturday at her local Primary school, Kennoway teaching early stages ballet and also helps at the Saturday club with multi-sports and arts and crafts.

Thursday evening she helps run drama workshops at the Collision Youth Theatre in Buckhaven and currently creating a set for their Alice in Wonderland show.

Beth has already racked up 500 volunteering hours and is well on her way to completing 1000 hours.

Beth has been appointed School Captain for the new Levenmouth Academy
