Brechin Cathedral Trust

Brechin Cathedral Trust is a newly formed SCIO, aiming to restore the cathedral to the centre of the community. Based in the heart of Angus, Scotland, Brechin has been a bustling centre on the cusp of the highlands for centuries. The cathedral has undoubtedly been the heart and soul of Brechin, since its creation in the 13th century - boasting the oldest example of a round tower in Scotland (one of only three outside of Ireland).

In recent times, the future of the cathedral has unfortunately become uncertain. The congregation has been disbanded and the Church of Scotland has deconsecrated the building as a Place of Worship. The status of the cathedral as a meeting place for the people of Brechin and wider Angus is in jeopardy.

But, the spirit of highlanders isn't easily broken and the community has therefore formed Brechin Cathedral Trust. Led by the Duchess of Fife and backed by over 500 respondees to a community survey, the charity looks to revive one of Scotland's most historic buildings into a bustling centre once again. BCT is implementing a CHAT model (Community, Heritage, Arts and Tourism) to guide activities and promote social cohesion and education. It looks to galvanise existing local provision, create programmes where support is lacking and amplify community impact.

At a recent Rotary Club meeting, development officer Chris Platt presented the plans of BCT, noting:

"Through a base of good governance, deliberate strategy and an attitude of collaboration, Brechin Cathedral Trust wants to rejuvenate a community that has lost so much but still has so much to be proud of."

Although at an early stage, the fledgling charity has already achieved a lot, has a professional and effective set-up and looks to begin operations proper in early 2024.
