A Club Fellowship Evening

Fellowship Evening

Martin Stonecliffe, who was due to take the Chair on August 15th, had come up with the proposal that we should have an evening of poetry as an opportunity to bring members together in a congenial atmosphere of fellowship. In his absence through ill health David Fletcher stood in as acting President and ran with what he thought was a wonderful idea stating that, although Club members meet each week and address Club business, we rarely have time for ourselves. He admitted that he had asked several members in advance to contribute to this evening's entertainment to ensure that there were enough contributions but as it happened members jostled to take the floor revealing that our Club contained a higher number of aesthetes then any of us had imagined!

Contributors and the works they chose to read and discuss were:

Ken Borneo –                    The Subaltern’s Love Song – John Betjeman

David Carrington -           The Tay Bridge Disaster – William McGonagall

Charles Codrington –     Gunga Din - Rudyard Kipling

Peter Cullum –                  Le Croix Rouge/National Baby Day -  Bertram Wardell

M Howard Lee -               The Life That I Have – Leo Marks

Alan Porter –                     The Game of Golf – Aniruddha Pathak

Ken Sanders                      Come Over to My Home – Theodor Geisel/ Dr Seus

Virendra Soni                    Go not to the Temple  - Rabindranath Tagore

Mike Salsbury                   Remember Me – Antony Dawson

Mike Whitlock.                 Gordon “Nifty” Robins/ Walter de la Mare

Acting President David wound up the meeting  by thanking Members for their participation, and for an impressive and  diverse range of compositions. There had been a great deal of laughter, and everybody was still smiling.
