Lunch time meeting - 12.55pm Ian Chalmers Primary Schools Scots Poetry Competition

On Thursday 23rd February 2023 in the absence of President Brian Johnson, SVP Scott Galloway took the meeting as he welcomed 13 Rotarians and 8 guests to this our lunch time meeting held at the Gilvenbank Hotel, Glenrothes.

Our penultimate competition of the year was the Scots Poetry competition which we judged today. This competition is for Primary Schools in the area who hold their own poetry competitions then the winners compete for the Ian Chalmers Quaich. Ian, who was a local Dentist, was a Founder member of Glenrothes Rotary. When he passed, his family donated money for the trophy and asked us to hold this competition in his memory. Ian’s Daughter Viki attended the meeting via Zoom from her home in Tenerife and was introduced to the Rotarians and guests by organiser Ian Oates.

We had 4 entrants this year and all were superb with Judges Anne Sampson, Doreen Gray and Jean Haughey having a difficult job in deciding the overall winner.

Entries were. Olivia Gilchrist - age 7 South parks PS, Reciting: Fed Up: Joss McAvoy - Markinch PS, Reciting: The Boy on the Train: Lauren MacDonald - Pitcoudie PS, Reciting: to A Mouse: Lewis Woodcock - Collydean PS, Reciting: Address to the Haggis, the overall winner was LEWIS WOODCOCK

Thanks to Rotarian Iain Oates for organising the competition along with Doreen Gray and Jean Haughey and Anne Sampson. Well done everyone.

Anne Sampson mentioned the afternoon tea held last Sunday 19th February 2023 at the Studio8 in Glenrothes with entertainment being provided by Brad Stalker and the Rock Choir with 100 attending in what turned out to be an excellent afternoon. Many thanks to our entertainers and to Euphene Shek who worked tirelessly to support the event. Also, thanks to Kirkcaldy Rotarian Shamshad for providing the afternoon Tea. Special thanks to Anne Sampson for organising the event and Rotarians for supporting before and on the day. The event raised £1500 with the main recipient being Homestart, Glenrothes.

Anne also mentioned that the Primary School Quiz which will take place on Thursday 2nd March at Auchmuty HS commencing at 6:30pm, with 13 Primary schools having responded, always a great event for Rotary, the pupils and the schools. At least 10 helpers required to support on the evening.

Scott Galloway once again mentioned the Race night to be held at Gilvenbank Hotel on Friday 7th April - 6.30 for 7pm in support of Fife Gingerbread and Autism Rocks. Tickets priced at £15. Ewen Macdonald mentioned the Defibrillators which he was looking to provide at Cadham and at Peploe Drive in support of the Cadham Pharmacy and Brighter Futures Charity, which we are looking to support.

The charity bucket collection for Turkey/Syrian earthquake takes place this Saturday 25th February at Cadham shops and 4th March at Kingdom Centre from 10am to 4pm where monetary donations for the Disaster can be given.

Marilyn Robertson mentioned that Kirkcaldy Golf Club were hosting a Curry and Comedy night in support of Love Oliver on the 31st March cost of tickets £25.

Next week Thursday 2ndt March 2023 arrival by 12.45pm commencing at 1pm prompt club business and fellowship.
