New Member and Speaker Evening.

Induction of new member and talk by Diane Calton Smith

Wisbech Rotary held an online meeting on 24 November.  President Richard Barnwell welcomed the Club’s newest member, Dr Snezana Lawrence, a mathematical historian who is a senior lecturer at Middlesex University.  It was confirmed that all the Christmas Boxes that the Club had bought through the Kids Out charity will be going to the local refuge for victims of domestic violence and their families.  Whilst the pandemic had prevented the usual arrangements for members and friends to fill ‘shoeboxes’ of goodies for families in Eastern Europe, Margaret Barwell reported that students at Wisbech Grammar School had undertaken to fill 100 boxes. It was agreed that the Club would fund prizes for the Christmas colouring competition being organised by Wisbech Library.

After the formal business of the meeting, members and guests enjoyed a talk by local author and historian, Diane Calton Smith, who spoke of her new novel, ‘In the Wash’. Diane took people on a fascinating journey through the Fens in 1216, when King John lost his treasure in The Wash. After her talk, Diane answered questions but failed to divulge the location of the treasure.  The president thanked Diane for her talk and commended her books to those attending.
