Tonight Sally will outline the impact that the Covid 19 pandemic has had on the charity sector that we have seen as funders, and what we have been doing about it, with some reflections on the challenges to come for charities.

I have worked in the world of disability my whole life. I started out delivering meals on wheels in my teens for the (then) WVS, which proved a good life education, as did spending my gap year working in one of the first modern hospices, founded by Dame Cicely Saunders. That led me to train as a speech and language therapist, working with people who had acquired disability through head injury and brain damage affecting their communication skills. In the search for effective therapies I moved into research, and then set up a charity to demonstrate how effectively people who have acquired communication disabilities can support each other to reconnect with life again. From there I came to Barnwood Trust 12 years ago, an old Gloucestershire charitable trust https://www.barnwoodtrust.org/. Our vision is to create the best possible environment in Gloucestershire for disabled people and people with mental health challenges to make the most of their lives. We work alongside people across Gloucestershire to bring the county closer together and to explode myths about disability and mental health. By sparking new community connections, providing grants and sharing knowledge, we enable people to shape the organisations they work in, where they live and to discover new opportunities. Over my 40+ years at work I have followed my personal goal: to contribute to making a world where, no matter what, everyone is valued, respected and included. I’ve been very honoured, along the way, to have been made a Deputy Lieutenant of Gloucestershire and to have been awarded an OBE.

The aim of the Community Awards programme is to support organisations within the city area with a small grant which ‘will make a real difference’. This is a small grants programme with awards of up to a maximum of £500.

Rotary@Kingsholm has discovered that Gloucester City as only 3 accessible defibrillators. This is the lowest number in the country. A new defibrillator costs about £2200. Our aim during the next 12 months is to raise enough money to double that number.

Longfield Hospice provides end of life support at home to reduce the demand on NHS beds. Recognising how It is vital that the hospice continues its work to help vulnerable people in need, we were happy to make a donation to their funds.
