An exciting weekend had been planned to host our Rotarian friends from Germany, with whom we have enjoyed a close partnership for over 40 years. We hoped as many as possible from our club will be able to participate in some, if not all, of the varied events that have been planned, especially the formal Gala Dinner.
Individual boards were to be put on the website for each of these events, but in the meantime here is a flavour of the weekend.
Thursday 21st May
Our Pirmasens guests arrive Birmingham Airport at 12.30. A coach will meet them and take them to Highgate House to meet their hosts.
Evening meal to be arranged by hosts (and any other Rotarians wishing to be included)
Friday 22nd May
Day trip to Waddesdon Manor
The coach will leave Christchurch Road at 9.15am. There will be a private guided tour arranged for us to see the ground floor rooms, followed by a tour of the Rothschild Wine Cellars including some wine tasting. A “Waddesdon Board” Lunch will be provided in a private dining room. In the afternoon there will be tours of the upper floor including the Treasury, and of the Gardens, the Parterre and Aviary. The coach will leave at approximately 4.15pm to return to Northampton
Pig Roast evening at Ecton Village Hall
6.00 for 6.30pm. Ian Brodie has been booked to provide his usual high standard of catering. We look forward to a relaxed informal evening of fellowship.
Saturday 23rd May
Visit to the University of Northampton. 10.30am – 1.00pm
The visit will include a tour of the new ICLT (Institute of Creative Leather Technologies) with its “state of the art” mini tannery and research laboratories. No formal lunch arrangements have been made, but options will be suggested.
Gala Dinner
6.30 for 7.00pm in the Bouverie Suite at Delapre Abbey.
A welcome drink will be provided with background music by Noel Lincoln. There will be pre-dinner talks on the history of the Abbey in the library. After dinner entertainment will be provided by Lincoln to include English and German folk songs. This event will be the highlight of the weekend and we look for a good response from our club to participate in this main twinning event.
Sunday 24th May
9.30am. We will say farewell to our Pirmasens friends as they leave by coach for Birmingham Airport.
