Online Meeting (Zoom)

In these grim days and uncertain times we look for small moments of enjoyment to brighten our lives. Across the Queensferry area as spring weather raises the spirits, people who received crocus corms when they donated to the Rotary End Polio Now campaign last October have been rewarded by the emergence of purple crocuses in gardens and on verges. The colour symbolises the dye put on the pinkies of children to show they have been vaccinated. The End Polio Now project which brings together Rotary International, the World Health Organisation, local health authorities and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, aims to eradicate polio from the world. It has been so successful that the disease is now only endemic in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria with very low numbers of new cases being reported.

In common with other organisations, The Rotary Club of South Queensferry has suspended its regular weekly meetings indefinitely during the corona virus crisis. However on Thursday 9th April, a virtual meeting and quiz was held via the Zoom format. Twenty members and two honorary members took part from locations as far apart as Aberdeen and Kelso. Gerald Smith set the questions and Norman Watson hosted the proceedings. With subjects ranging from TV and Radio to Cartoon Dogs, Sport and Food and Drink, there was plenty to puzzle over. Team Kelso, consisting of honorary member Gordon McInally and his wife Heather, won with an outstanding 42 points out of 50. President Jim McCulloch thanked Gerald and Norman for organising the evening and congratulated the participants for coping with the technology which was unfamiliar to many of them. The Zoom meeting was judged a success and it is planned to continue with vitual meetings for the duration of the crisis.
