RYLA experiences

On Thursday 4th October 2018 President Anne Sampson welcomed 18 Club Rotarians, former Rotarian lars Christiansen, Calum Kilpatrick, Kerrie Walker, Yvonne Logan and Debbie Donnelly to this lunch time meeting which was held at the Gilvenbank Hotel, Glenrothes.

On reception, this week were Lindsay Roy who said grace and Ron Page.

President Anne Sampson brought back greetings from the Rotary Club of Howe of Fife whom she and husband Geoff had attended prior to the Gavel competition. Anne also looked for approval which was granted by the club members to send £500 to Shelter box to enable them to forward a Shelter box to Central Sulawesi, Indonesia because of the recent earthquake and tsunami. Also £200 for Crossroads Fife Central who operate across Fife, providing high-quality person-centred support to Carers and people of any age affected by disability or illness. Anne on behalf of Tracy Thomson spoke about the very interesting visit to the poppy factory in Edinburgh which was attended by several Rotarians last week. Well done to Rotarian Iain Oates who had successfully completed the 10k Glasgow run the previous week and had raised over £700 with the money going towards Alzheimer’s Scotland.

Wilna Roger spoke about the annual High 5 Gavel competition between Kirkcaldy High School and Rotary Club against Glenrothes Rotary and Interactors with a date of 24th October being mentioned. Also, our Interactors are looking to fundraise by means of a project called” Give a kid a coat” anybody reading this we would welcome the public contacting us if you have any excess kids coats in your home.

Geoff Sampson mentioned that we had participated in two successful nights in this year’s Gavel competition being beaten by the Howe of Fife away at Pitlessie and then winning against Perth Kinnoull last Wednesday evening.

Our speakers this week were our RYLA candidates from last July Calum Kilpatrick from Auchmuty High School and Kerrie Walker from Glenwood High School giving us feedback on their RYLA camp experiences. The common theme of these feedbacks from the students are the activities they are involved with over the course of the weeks camp at the Abernethy Trust Centre in Nethybridge, just a few miles from Aviemore.  The Abernethy Centre is the location and is staffed by a group of dedicated and talented course leaders, professionally qualified in the specialised field of outdoor pursuits. In all activities, the highest standard of safety is paramount. The pupils who come from all over our District, Scotland North is a Rotary International programme which offers young people an opportunity to participate in a programme of physical and intellectual activities, which will develop skills in. Team working, Positive leadership, communication, problem Solving and decision making. On these foundations are built self-confidence and self-esteem which are vital aspects of responsible and global citizenship. The activities include cycling, canoeing, abseiling, gorge walking and so many team building exercises. There is no cost to participants (well maybe some pocket money). The cost of the week, including travel, is covered by your local Rotary club.

The Rotary vote of thanks was given by Murray Grubb.
