A visit from two students on the Rotary Scholar's Programme.

A visit from Rotary Scholars

Hungerford Rotary Club had some special guests for their last meeting in April.

Two Rotary International scholars were invited to address the club and give it's member more details on the Rotary Scholars scheme.

Richard Kirby from Abingdon Rotary Club, who are sponsoring the girls, introduced the  Victoria Cox from Australia and Emilia PooI Illsley from Mexico. Both gave presentations about their studies at the University of Oxford  and their areas of research in various parts of the world.

Emilia is researching a "water for all scheme" and working towards the integration of the population in the interests of the reduction of poverty and improvement in the quality of life in her native Mexico.

Victoria, who qualified as a medical Doctor in Adelaide, has worked in the Northern Territory to help the cause of the indigenous population there, who suffer from scabies and other skin problems. She also has a number of areas of research including Digital Health Strategies.

Global grants are for graduate students studying abroad are given for one of Rotary’s six causes: Promoting peace, fighting disease, providing clean water, sanitation, and hygiene, saving mothers and children, supporting education and growing local economies.

Members were able to see from the example of these two Scholars that money raised by Rotary Foundation (The Charitable arm of Rotary International), goes to a very worth while cause which will benefit needy areas of the world both now and in the future.
