Howe of Fife Rotary Meeting Tuesday 22nd January 2019

Speaker: Jim Boyd Rotary Club of Glenrothes.

Jim engaged his audience in an illustrated talk on the history, mystery, and story of playing cards through the ages. Cards first appeared in China in the 12th century and in Western Europe in the 15th century. Initially known as “Tarrow” cards the present day suits were depicted as swords, batons, coins, and chalices. The backs of the cards, initially blank, had designs added from 1860 to deter cheating! He went on to describe the significance of individual cards such a the 4 of clubs – the Devils Bedpost! The audience were most grateful for this entertaining and informative talk.
