My week at RYLA

On Thursday 7th September 2017 in the absence of President Lindsay Roy, Senior Vice President Anne Sampson took the chair as she welcomed 16 Club Rotarians, Rotarian Derek Thomson from the Rotary Club of Cupar, guest speaker Ally Kinnear, and Mr Gray from Glenrothes High School  to this lunch time meeting which was held at the Gilvenbank Hotel, Glenrothes.

Eight apologies for absence were received.

On reception, this week were Archie Lawrie who said grace and Murray Grubb.

Rotarian Derek Thomson from the Rotary Club of Cupar brought greetings from his club President Colin as he brought an invite to our club from his inviting us to their 85th charter dinner on the 10th November 2017

SVP Anne Sampson mentioned that along with husband Geoff and IPP Brian Johnson and his wife Kay they attended the 1st Charter dinner of Buckhaven and Methil last week in the Methil Bowling Club as they all enjoyed a great evening. She also mentioned that Fund raiser Tracy Thomson had booked a bag packing evening at Morrison’s store on 6th October 2017 from 4-9pm

Our speaker this week was our RYLA representative from last July Ally Kinnear supported by a slide show presentation. Ally spoke about the RYLA events which are for young people aged 16 to 17 years, who are about to start their working lives or to enter higher education, and who have shown leadership potential and are likely, as adults, to become future leaders.  Students are put into mixed groups of complementary ability where they take part in outdoor activities.  They are placed in challenging situations to help develop leadership and team bonding skills and to increase personal confidence. She spoke about how RYLA Changes Lives and said that the experience of RYLA has truly been one of the most memorable and best things she has ever done in her life.  The staff at Castle Head are brilliant, the activities are very good, the food was great, but most importantly the people she met there are now true friends. She spoke about what happened on the course activities included canoeing, abseiling, hiking and camping overnight under canvas.  Students are closely supervised by specialist staff at all times. The students must be prepared for a range of tough physical and mental challenges, such as getting wet, problem solving and practical group leadership exercises where each student has the opportunity to develop key leadership skills. On closing Ally thanked the club for being given the opportunity of going on the camp.

The Rotary Vote of thanks was given by Murray Grubb.
