On Thursday, 11th January 2018, members and friends of the Rotary Club of South Queensferry celebrated the New Year by having a formal evening. The special guest speaker on this occasion was Neil Murray QC and members were treated to a rare insight into the legal profession and the courtroom.
Neil graduated in law at the age of 19 and then went on to do a post-graduate degree in archaeology. He passed advocate in 1979, taking silk in 1992. He sat as a Temporary Sheriff from 1988 to 2000 and also acts as legal adviser to several Scottish daily newspapers.
Listeners were held enthralled as Neil recounted his experiences. He spoke with humour and a passion about his profession and the ethics surrounding it. He aroused a great deal of interest in court procedure, as was shown by the number of question posed to him afterwards.
Eric Proven introduced Neil, the vote of thanks being given by Robert Farrelly who commented on the fact that he had become so engrossed in what Neil was saying, that he forgot to take notes to make use of, when composing the vote of thanks!
