12th January - A talk by Phil Healey about Gambia Bees
We were told how Beekeeping and making bee products can help individuals and communities to significantly improve their economic well-being. In the Gambia beekeeping has significant potential for income generation for those engaged in agriculture, horticulture and forestry, the overwhelming majority of whom are classified as poor on the UN poverty index. A well managed small (5 KTB hive) apiary has the potential to earn £100-200 pa, about doubling many incomes. It is a skilled activity but it takes relatively little time and fits well with rural work.
Bee products include honey and beeswax. Honey is easy to sell; supply is far lower than demand and it is seasonal. Little beeswax is produced, not withstanding, it is a key ingredient of soaps, creams, balms, etc.
19th January - The Jinny Nature Trail, past and present by CLIVE BAKER
Gerald Wright writes: It was a great pleasure to intoduce Clive Baker as the Club’s Speaker on Monday. Clive together with Joyce and myself, Janet Threlfall and Carl Brister grew up in the area around St. Chad’s Church and so we all remember with fondness the Tutbury Jinny, a steam train that ran a regular passenger service between Burton and Tutbury via Horninglow, Stretton and Rolleston on Dove. With a Technical Illustrators/ Engineering background and his passion for Steam Trains, Clive built on his childhood memories to help form a heritage facility.
He started his talk with a brief history of the North Staffs Line that opened in 1848 and the last passenger train on 11th June 1960.
Illustrations were shown of Clives actual model and 3-dimensional virtual version to illustrate the history of the Railway. A proposal, highlighting how such media could enhance the experience of walking along the Jinny Nature trail, was submitted to the Parish Council in 2009. A Transport Festival was held in the Village and from this event a number of interested persons formed a group known as “ The Rolleston Engineering and Transport Society “ or TREATS.
After much preparatory research, working parties began immediately assessing the work needed to be done by clearing brambles and other vegetation. Lottery Funding was granted in 2014 and all areas cleared and wild flower seeds planted between the platforms with the assistance of Rolleston Brownies and pupils from John of Rolleston School. A replica station nameboard positioned in its original location together with traditional platform bench were constructed.
Clive emphasised that it is important that the station area of the Jinny Trail remains sympathetic to its nature trail status, but with information panels placed at strategic locations describing both railway heritage as well as flora and fauna, the remains of structures built by the North Staffs Railway Company, part of a transport system that changed and enhanced the lives of local people should once more enliven the experience for Rolleston people and their visitors when enjoying the Jinny Nature Trail.
The work will carry on to preserve and improve the area. Clives enthusiasm for the project inspired us all and as a fellow steam train buff I was full of admiration in what our Speaker had achieved in trying to preserve our heritage for future generations.
This photo was shown during Clives talk – this copy is from my own collection. It shows the Jinny crossing Derby Road in Burton (near the junction with Eton Road) before the opening of the A38 By-Pass
You can still see, today, the bump in the road where the crossing gates were and there are two houses built where Horninglow Station was.
26th January - An Introduction to Barnardos by Amanda Warrant
Amanda Warrent from Barnardo's gave us an entertaining talk on Barnardo's covering the history and evolution of this worldwide organisation. She had a remarkable grasp of the facts after just two years in her job, and was able to deal with the need for Barnardo's to change, Leeds football team, the help Barnardo's received from overseas, and the lack of hair straighteners.!!!!
