Abandoned Girls in India

Wed, Oct 22nd 2014 at 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Rotaract member, Keertna Sapra gave a talk on a school for abandoned girls in the remote part of India where her grandfather is from.

In remote parts of India the girl child is sometimes not wanted and is abandoned.

In a small village where Keertna's granfather is from, there is a two teacher school of 55 girls from 5-18 years old.

These girls were all abandoned by their families and come from different parts of India and from different religions.

The girls live with the 2 teachers in a safe environment.

They are taught self defense for their safety. Yoga and music are used as a way to improve the confidence of the girls.  They grow vegetables and have cows for milk.

They have no English books and although internet connection is possible they have poor facilities for publicising the good work done by the 2 teachers. The older girls help to teach the younger girls.

Rotaract could build a web site for the school and raise awareness in the outside world of their needs.  It is hoped that this may raise donations which Keertna would see are well spent for the girls wellbeing and education.
