The speaker on Tuesday 23rd June was club secretary Garth Mann, a retiredpolice officer, his theme was ‘1965 and All That.’ A welcome visitor for the evening was Wing Commander Geoff Wright
On 19th June 1965 Garth wassworn in, into the office of police constable in Birmingham.The Office of Constable means a police officer has the additional legal powers of arrest and control of the public given to them directly by a sworn oath (attestation) and warrant. Sir Robert Mark a Commissioner of theMetropolitan Police expands on this in his memoirs, ’In The Office of Constable.’
To commemorate this unique event he also commented upon many other events that took place in 1965 including the death of Winston Churchill, Great TrainRobber, Ronnie Biggs escapes and the first episode of ‘Thunderbirds’ Among the notable births were Vinnie Jones, Piers Morgan and David Milliband. The deathsincluded W Somerset Maugham and Stan Laurel
