On Thursday 7th November, President Iain Fairbairn welcomed Councillor Jim Leishman MBE, Provost of Fife, as the speaker at the Rotary Club of South Queensferry. In a talk full of wit and good humour, Jim reminisced about his time as a most promising footballer, ( he scored the winning goal for Dunfermline against Rangers when only 16 years old ) and later coach and manager when his playing career was cut short by injury at the age of twenty. Jim went on to manage seven clubs, and win the championship in the first, second and third divisions. His inspirational management style was well illustrated by the fund of anecdotes of behaviour both on and off the pitch, like the time he compared his team, about to play Rangers, to David and Goliath and found himself described in the press as 'Bible thumping Jim Leishman' after winning two nil. Asked to stand as a Fife Councillor by Gordon Brown, Jim won the seat and was golfing in Spain when an urgent call asked him to return as he was to be made Provost. Managerial and political success was clouded by tragedy when his wife died suddenly of cancer. Jim established the Mary Leishman Foundation in her memory.
