On Thursday 5th September our speaker was Rotarian Harry Smith, Chairman of the District Foundation Committee. Rotary's own charity, the Rotary Foundation is a major contributor to world humanitarian projects such as End Polio Now - the drive to eradicate the disease. The aim is to complete the programme in 2014. If no new cases have emerged by 2018, polio, like smallpox, will be a thing of the past. Harry also cited smaller projects which epitomised how Foundation can make a difference at local level. A scheme to help disabled shoemakers in Mozambique ensures dignity and financial security for disadvantaged craftsmen and their families. A project to support, supply and train midwives in Malawi ensures better care for mothers. He then outlined the targets for Foundation for this Rotary year.
President Iain Fairbairn introduced Hugh Murphy. In memory of his mother, Hugh and his family financed an ambulance for the poor Christian community of Lahore. In thanking the club for their support of the project, Hugh announced that the Margaret Murphy Free Ambulance had now been fitted with a new set of tyres, a great help on the often poor roads of Pakistan.
Iain thanked Rotarians who had volunteered to undertake the recent collection to Tesco on behalf of Macmillan Cancer Care.
In the latest round of the District Quiz, we beat Larbert by 19 points to 17.
