THE MAKUNDUCHI PROJECT
WHAT IS THE MAKUNDUCHI PROJECT?
The UK registered charity is named the Health Improvement Project - Zanzibar (HIPZ) whose primary aim is to renovate, equip and run a hospital in Makunduchi in southern Zanzibar. That hospital serves a population of approximately 80,000 people who currently have little or no access to healthcare.
WHAT IS THE STATE OF HEALTHCARE CURRENTLY IN ZANZIBAR
* Life expectancy 46.5 years.
* 1 maternal death per 25 births (2007 audit carried out in Zanzibar)
* 1 in 7 children die aged less than 7 of whom 2/3 die aged less than 2 years
* In Tanzania nationally 125,000 deaths caused by malaria each year of which 80.000 are children.
MAKUNDUCHI HOSPITAL
The hospital was built between 1981 and 1993 and was funded by Danida. It was originally built to a reasonably high standard of construction but little has been done to the original fabric of the building in the ensuing 25 years.
MAIN AIMS OF MAKUNDUCHI HOSPITAL PROJECT
* To establish a public/private partnership with the government of Zanzibar to enable HIPZ to take over the running of Makunduchi hospital for a period of at least 10 years.
* Upgrading of the staff, facilities, equipment, financing and management of Makunduchi Hospital to enable it to provide an essential package of level 1 hospital care.
* Blood banking/transfusion and transport services.
* Development of an active and ongoing clinical and management research programme with the aim of indentifying cost effective management and clinical care
They hope that, if this private/public partnership is successful at Makunduchi, the same template will be used initially in other hospitals in Zanzibar and possibly then on the mainland.
Success of the Makunduchi Hospital Project will result in the provision of health care to the population of approximately 100,000 people in the southern part of Zanzibar who currently have little or no access to medical care of any kind.
CURRENT PROGRESS
Their Charity has just signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the government of Zanzibar to proceed with this project and after meeting with all senior governmental personnel including the President himself they have official backing of the government. Their charity is now responsible for the renovation, equipping and running of the hospital for the next 10 years. They have employed a Project Manager in Zanzibar to take the next stages of the project forward and a Hospital General Manager took up her post on Dec 15th 2007.
