Rotary Youth Leadership Award

An all-expenses-paid opportunity for personal development

Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA)

What is RYLA?

Haddenham Rotary sponsor the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards
An all-expenses-paid programme for young people between 18 and 30 years of age
offering a special opportunity to take part in activities
which develop qualities of leadership, team working
personal initiative and problem solving

The scheme is designed to develop the latent talents
of anyone held back by lack of confidence
by emphasising opportunities for personal learning and growth

Who Is Selected?

The 6 day course is available to young persons
of all backgrounds, abilities, vocations and social groups
from schools and businesses

Candidates are chosen for their leadership and development potential,
their commitment and determination to succeed
and preparedness to contribute to, as well as benefit from, the course

Candidates must be 18 years old by the first day of the course
It will be an alcohol free week

Candidates are interviewed by Haddenham Rotary to ensure candidates are selected
for their ability and attitude to maximise their leadership potential

Preference is given to candidates who would not otherwise get the opportunity
to take part in such an award scheme
The candidate who will gain most, is the one who is prepared to contribute most!

How Does It Work?

The first day is a mandatory Induction Day when participants engage in a series of activities
designed to encourage group dynamics and to get to know each other

Three days are spent team building and learning new skills, for example, orienteering
rock climbing, abseiling, canoeing and slate mine exploration

These skills are then applied and tested in a 30 hour group exercise
including a night in the open in locations around the Snowdonia National Park

At the end of the course participants are awarded a certificate
after demonstrating their new found confidence by
making a short presentation on their experiences, to Haddenham Rotary

Where Does It Happen?

The course takes place during July/August
at the privately owned Outdoor Education Centre, Rhos-y-Gwaliau
a small hamlet near Lake Bala in the Snowdonia National Park, North Wales
and an ideal location for this Rotary inspired initiative

The Centre is staffed by a small group of dedicated and talented course leaders
professionally qualified in the specialised field of outdoor leisure pursuits

In all activities the highest standard of safety is paramount
