Presenters: Tim Knight CEO Mark Cox Horticultural Specialist
Motto: Dig – Plant- Grow- Achieve
Tim and Mark gave a very interesting talk about the work of this charity which deals with children who have special needs and who might find difficulty in finding work later in life.
Fact: Less than 7% of people with special education needs and hearing disabilities are in employment.
Green Corridor’s aim is to connect to young disadvantaged people, between 16 and 25 and their communities to more promising futures.
The charity is based on Heathrow land near to T5. Called Main Road Nurseries, it functions as a small nursery where the children are taught how to grow plants, flowers, vegetables etc. The children are carefully selected and are drawn from the surrounding Boroughs who can access the T5 area easily.
The Airport owns the land and buildings and provide a lot of support to this growing enterprise. The unit is staffed by many volunteers, and we were shown slides of the children at work. They currently have fourteen pupils and they received 6000 volunteer hours last year.
Based on the success of this current project there are plans to extend the subjects taught to cover Cooking and Catering then later Construction.
They arrange visits from local special needs schools and are keen to let people know that these children can be taught useful skills to allow them to be employed in later life. A very inspiring and well-presented project run by two very skilled and committed people.
