Who and where are we?
We are the longest established of the many Rotary Clubs around the world with Newport in their name having been formed in 1920. We are one of four clubs in the City of Newport which is a Welsh Seaport on the Bristol Channel in the UK.
We have recently moved our Tuesday lunchtime meetings to the Priory Hotel in Caerleon near the famous Roman Amphitheatre. Turn left into Broadway and left into Hotel car park.
The club is particularly proud of its efforts to promote high achievements among the youth in its community. Support is given to the Scouts & Guides and to the local Sea Cadets. We support a Rotary Young Musician competition and each year two or three students are selected to take part in a Rotary Youth Leadership camp in the Brecon Beacons National Park. We are also pleased to have set up is a bursary aimed at ensuring young people in real financial difficulty are not excluded from taking part in a Duke of Edinburgh Awards' scheme.
More information about our work can be found on the Projects page.
Funds are raised in many ways including bucket collections, prize draws, garden parties and concerts. Thanks to sponsorship from Leisure Time Coach Holidays and from the Abbeyfield (South Wales) Society and invaluable help from the excellent Christchurch Centre, our last concert was staged specially as a free one for the City's senior citizens. The beneficiaries of our previous concert held in the splendour of Newport (St Woolos) Cathedral were the Latch Charity at the Children's Hospital for Wales and the Cathedral Emergency Charity. In both cases we are indebted to the Gwent Music Support Team and theamazing young muicians nd singers who perform so willingly. .
.We believe it is important for members and friends have plenty of opportunities to enjoy themselves as well as the satisfaction of helping others. An outing to Westerbirt Arboretum was fun; a theatre visit to 'Dad's Army' was a laugh' and some of us are not averse to dressing up in fancy dress!
If you are not a Rotarian perhaps, after checking this and other pages, you will realise what you have been missing. Contact us now via the Contact Form at the head of this page.
Gwent Schools Nusic Support Group
Clubs in the Gwent area have been appreciative of the tremendous work carried out by the Group and the help give in various fundraising ventures. As a concewence of local government cuts the Group has lost its funding so several clubs have found money to ensure the Annual Nusic Festival c was able to be held in 2014.
Be part of a global network of volunteers, trying to make the world a better place. Please also see the 'links & news' page for information from the local district and live feeds from Rotary International and Rotary International in GB&I.
