Another very successful Christmas Challenge for End Polio Now was completed last year, with members, friends and fellow Rotarians all enthusiastically signing up for our brain teasing quiz over the holiday break. As before there are no prizes, it’s just a fun quiz to provide interest and fun over the festive season.
Our heartfelt thanks to our Quiz Maestros, Sarah and Roger Kettle, who were persuaded to develop another quiz again this year.
The good news is that even after the due completion date and publication of our Christmas Newsletter, we had some further donations to this great cause. As we reported previously, the Buttsbury Primary School children’s quiz of only 50 questions brought in £220, all of which was deposited with GlobalGiving for its “Giving Tuesday” campaign and received a bonus of 16.4%, which net of fees is a bonus of 8.4%, a further £18.50 making the Buttsbury total raised of £238.50. In addition, every donation to End Polio Now by Rotary is doubled by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation - an extra £477.
So Buttsbury will have raised a total of over £715, which is worth over 6,800 vaccines.
The main quiz contained 20 different sections and just over 100 varied questions. It was distributed to members of the Rotary Club of Billericay and by them to family and friends, and was also circulated with the District Governor’s support, to all Rotary Clubs in the District.
The money we received in donations is just the beginning. As with the Buttsbury receipts, all the eligible portion of the money raised is maximised through the Government’s “Gift Aid” Scheme, and then deposited in GlobalGiving’s “Giving Tuesday” campaign, which this year added another 8.4%. Then that total is tripled by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.”
The final figure for the total receipts from the challenge are at £3625.06 including Gift Aid, and the GlobalGiving bonus is just under £551. This includes the over £238 raised by the children of Buttsbury Primary School (see above).
Add in the contribution of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and the grand total is £12,527.64
So this challenge has raised over £12,527, which will ensure the purchase of over 119,000 Polio vaccinations depending on this year’s purchase price.
Roger summed it all up “Thank you all for your contributions in helping us to achieve this excellent result. I do hope you will be willing to support the Charity Fun Quiz initiative again at Christmas 2026”.
