The Rotary Club of Welwyn Garden City recently held its annual Youth Speaks Debate competition, hosted by Bishop's Hatfield Girls’ School. The event brought together local students to demonstrate their public speaking skills, critical thinking, and ability to engage with complex contemporary issues.

The evening was a significant success, marked by a high standard of oratory from all participating teams. The competition was overseen by Past President Sue Forrow, whose tireless dedication to organising the event ensured a seamless experience for both competitors and attendees.

Professional Recognition and Leadership

Joint President Andrew Forrow commended the high calibre of this year’s participants and the support provided by the club's membership. In an official statement, he noted:

"Special congratulations are extended to all competitors and the Rotarians who supported Past President Sue Forrow in leading this year's Youth Speaks competition at Bishop's Hatfield Girls' School. The judges, timekeepers, and questioners were unanimous in their agreement that the debates were excellent in both content and delivery. Well done to everyone involved."

The Club also wishes to express its gratitude to Amanda Joseph for her contribution to the event's professional presentation and set-up, and to the many Rotarians who attended to provide an encouraging audience for the students.

Competition Results

The competition was divided into Intermediate and Senior categories, with the following schools achieving top honours:

Senior Category Winners: Onslow St Audrey’s School

  • Chairperson: Gloria Acho-Ohaka

  • Proposer: Malik Khalaf

  • Opposer: Thahsi Gausa

Pathway to the National Finals

Following their success at this local heat, both winning teams will progress to the District Finals. Here, they will represent Welwyn Garden City against schools from across Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, and Hertfordshire.

Success at the district level provides a pathway to the South East England regional finals, culminating in the National Competition. The Rotary Club of Welwyn Garden City wishes both teams the very best of luck as they advance through these stages.

Future Participation

The Youth Speaks competition remains a cornerstone of Rotary’s commitment to youth development. Looking ahead to the next academic year, the Club encourages participation from all local secondary schools and hopes to welcome teams from Stanborough, Ridgeway, and Sherrardswood to join the 2027 competition.
