Celebrating Rotary Bridgend's centenary with members and guests

On Friday 13th March, almost 100 years to the day since we received our Charter, Rotary Bridgend held a Centenary Celebration Dinner at the Masonic Hall in Bridgend. We had a number of Rotary guests join us, including the District Governor, the District Governor Elect and representatives from Rotary Cowbridge, Rotary Maesteg and Rotary Porthcawl.

Also joining us were a number of very special guests, including the Mayor of Bridgend County Borough Council, The Mayor and Mayoress of Bridgend Town Council, the Lord Lieutenant of Mid Glamorgan, the High Sheriff of Mid Glamorgan, the Honorary Consul for Japan in Wales, Bridgend Lions and Bridgend Soroptimists.

We were also delighted to welcome representatives from our Centenary Projects (see below).

The evening started with our Director of Ceremonies, Rotarian Brian Murrell, giving the loyal toast followed by a welcome from Rotary Bridgend President Paul Cheadle.

After an excellent three course dinner, District Governor Ian Hughes made the toast to Rotary Bridgend, congratulating us on our centenary. Rotary Bridgend Secretary Mike Lewis responded.

It was then a delight, especially on such an occasion, that two of our members, Robin Bratton and John McCarthy received Paul Harris Fellowships. These were introduced by Secretary Mike and presented by District Governor Ian with congratulation from President Paul.

Two videos were then shown. Firstly, congratulations on reaching our centenary milestone from Rotary International President Francesco Arezzo. This was followed by a video about Rotary Bridgend's three centenary projects.

Next a raffle was held, raising £585 for local charities. The evening concluded with entertainment from an excellent Niel Diamond tribute act.

Amongst the items on display were:

A copy of Rotary Bridgend's original Charter

A letter of congratulations from Rotary International President Francesco Arezzo

A certificate of congratulations from Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland
