A Life

Adrian Hughes

Kendal Rotary’s speaker on 1st December was former District Governor Adrian Hughes, one of our own members.

Adrian reflected on what has made him who he is, from playing an away game at Rugby School and having tea with Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother whilst at Bedford School, through his time in advertising, remembering a campaign to recruit to the police force and working with Japan Airlines. Later a director at a well known store encouraged him to help himself from the shelves when the shop was closed (he declined) and he massively exceeded targets for selling IBM photocopiers – he was rewarded with silver candlesticks (they’re still in a cupboard) and he was in the vaults of the Bank of England when a truck load of 30 gold bars trundled past.

Holidays and experience of different cultures have added to the mix and Rotary International Conferences have led to a wider understanding of the way different cultures see the world. In Torquay he sat between George Martin and Floella Benjamin and met Sir Tom Finney at a Preston Rotary Club meeting. As District Governor his club organised members to drive him around District 1190: they too experienced the good and the quirky ideas of other clubs. A grateful and happy recollection of some key points in his life.
