Hatfield, Friday 21st November 2025 – The Hatfield Town Centre Light Switch-On Ceremony successfully launched the festive season, with Hatfield and Welwyn Garden City Rotary Club playing a central role in supporting the community event. The evening provided a vibrant atmosphere for local residents and families.
The ceremony featured a variety of entertainment, including music from DJ DRE MBWESE, performances by the Essendon Primary School choir, the Musical Melodies Youth Choir, and a serenade from George Anthony, who performed a mix of classic hits and Christmas music. The event also included food stalls and fairground rides.
The highlight of the evening for many children was the presence of the Rotary Santa Sleigh. Club volunteers managed the appearance of Santa and Mrs. Claus, ensuring a memorable experience for young attendees.
Santa Duties: Our Santa had the distinct honour of officially switching on the lights alongside the Mayor, Councillor Lynn Chesterman. Following the ceremony, Santa posed for pictures with children and personally presented them with a wrapped gift.
Mrs. Claus: Mrs. Claus was stationed with the sleigh and also helped manage the festive grotto set up inside the Library.
We extend a massive thank you to the members of the Welwyn Garden City Rotary Satellite Club, whose extraordinary effort makes the Santa Sleigh programme possible. Their dedication involves standing in the cold weather, setting up gazebos, hauling heavy equipment (including the sleigh) from point A to point B, managing the packing and breakdown of the site, and directing traffic. Their commitment is the engine that drives this beloved community event.
This event reflects Rotary’s commitment to community service and bringing joy to local residents. We were delighted to contribute to the success of the evening.
The Rotary Club extends its thanks to Welwyn Hatfield Council for organising this well-attended community event and hopes to continue this collaboration in future years.
