RESILIENT HOMESTEADS TRAINING PROJECT (SOUTH MALAWI)
Introduction:
The International RCWF Resilient Homesteads Training project in South Malawi, addressed post-Cyclone Freddy recovery by promoting sustainable rebuilding, food security, and income generation through eco-construction and permaculture techniques.
Key Ideas and Themes:
• Disaster Impact and Challenges: Cyclone Freddy destroyed 300,000 homes and crops, leaving poor villagers with food shortages, lack of cash, and limited rebuilding skills, while avoiding further environmental damage .
• Resilient Homestead Model: The pilot project demonstrates low-cost, eco-friendly housing using wattle and daub, bamboo frames, and recycled materials, designed for durability and climate resilience, costing about £750 per unit.
• Food Security and Permaculture: Training focuses on permaculture, vertical cultivation, and edible storm hedges to improve yields, reduce water use, and increase income, especially for women .
• Skills Training and Employment: Over 140 families received training in eco-construction, carpentry, furniture making, and sustainable farming, enhancing job prospects and community regeneration .
• Health and Amenity Improvements: Dry toilets, smoke-reducing kitchens, and biogas use improve sanitation and reduce respiratory risks .
• Project Funding and Impact: Supported by Rotary with a £5,000 District 1010 Grant, the model offers scalable solutions potentially benefiting millions of displaced people globally.
Conclusion:
The project successfully integrates sustainable construction, food security, and skills training to empower cyclone-affected communities, offering a replicable, cost-effective model for climate-resilient rebuilding and livelihood restoration.
