Dr Chris Moss from Beep Doctors was our very welcome guest on 22nd September.
He gave us an overview of the service they provide and the logistics involved in running an emergency clinical and surgical response service in our area, especially when existing resources are overwhelmed. Chris quoted examples of their life saving activities and how they filled gaps in provision to deal with the casualties of storms Arwen and Desmond.
Chris and the team also have responsibility for raising £150-£200k per year and he was proud to report the success of replacing their four well equipped cars (£70-£80k each). Their equipment is extensive and expensive (eg £18k for a defibrillator, £15k for a ventilator) and drugs add significantly to the cost of running the service. Ongoing costs such as vehicle servicing (£2k+) also need to be factored in.
Some of the proceeds from Kendal Rotary Club’s Golf Day were donated to Beep Doctors and their fundraising includes legacies and a sponsored cycle ride around Cumbria, which also raises awareness. Chris himself has recently completed a sponsored cycle ride from Athens to Amsterdam in 21 days … people told him it was impossible; he was happy to prove them wrong and was practicing what he preached - that moving and self care are the best means of staying healthy.
