In 2022 with the help of a Foundation grant the Rotary Club of Denby Dale & District provided the funding for the rehabilitation of a borehole and well ion a village in Northern Uganda.Water had to be collected from a dirty stream some distance from the village and this was used for drinking, cooking and washing. The bore hole first established by the Ugandan Government had been left to fall into disrepair and was unusable. With the help of a UK charity " the Busoga Trust " we were able to repair the borehole and well providing the community with fresh water, a number of hand wash stations and many more latrines. I have kept in touch with the Trust to see how the village was managing and very recently we received the attached testimonial.Good to see that we can and do make a considerable difference to the lives of those in need. Busoga Trust report
Bukaduyu Namusisi 1: Borehole Functionality Update, 28th July 2025 Bukaduyu Namusisi 1 borehole is located in Namusisi village, Nabitende Sub-County in Iganga district. It was rehabilitated in May 2021 by Busoga Trust generously funded by the Rotary Club of Denby Dale. The borehole serves over approximately 300 community members across sixty households. Since the time of rehabilitation in 2021, the borehole has been continuously functional, providing enough water for the entire community. This has been realised through maintaining a close working relationship with the local hand pump mechanic, the water user committee (which is the committee in the community who are responsible for maintaining and looking after the water source) and Busoga Trust. Community Testimonies Namukose Suzan (pictured) is 30 years and a mother of 4 children is one of the beneficiaries/water users of the Bukaduyu Namusisi 1 borehole. “My home is just 20 meters from the borehole. I can comfortably leave my children at home and I go to fetch water from our borehole without worrying of their safety because I can watch over them even when I am at the borehole unlike before when I used to trek a long distance to search for water when it was non-functional and left my children alone. Now, my family and I prepare meals on time, easily do our laundry and also drink safe, clean water which means good health! Thank you! Waiswa Constantine, 45 years old is one of the dedicated Water User Committee members serving as the Secretary ever since the intervention of Busoga Trust in their community in 2021. “In the beginning, we thought the stainless-steel pipes were going to rust and maybe get holes when Busoga Trust repaired our borehole as other metal had rusted, but as I speak, it pumps safe, clean water without any rust particles, the water is very palatable to drink and soft. Since 2021, we have experienced only one minor breakdown which was fixed immediately. This has helped to keep our water user funds/savings intact. We appreciate the quality work done during the rehabilitation which has saved us from the frequent breakdowns experienced before.
