In Kenya, only primary schools are free, and many poor but bright children can’t afford further education so may drop out of education altogether. An ongoing sponsorship programme between Embu and Billericay raises funds to ensure bright children can go on to further education in Senior Schools and University, but there are never enough funds to meet the demand.
Margaret visited St Francis Ciamanda Mixed Day Senior School where there are nine sponsored students, and she met other sponsored children at Moi High School, Mbiruri, St Anne’s High School, Kiriari, and Hon Kiragu Stephen High School, Kirinyaga. These children are working hard and getting good marks because they appreciate the opportunity they have been given.
