St. Luke's Hospice Anniversary

Sat, Jun 14th 2025 at 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

St. Luke's Hospice celebrated its 35th. anniversary with garden parties at its two hospices. Rtn. Brain Wellman from our club is a Trustee and a great supporter of that organisation.

An Anniversary Celebration

We are all used to how hard our secretary, Brain Wellman, works to support our club, organising our members and supporting our President and club officers.

Staring at Us

We also know that he has a history of service to the community, serving previously as a JP as a Prison Visitor. and a Governor of Basildon Hospital.  We also know that not only does he put such a lot of effort into our club, but he also continues to serve the community in other ways, one of which is acting as a Trustee of St. Luke’s Hospice.  A role which he takes very seriously.

We were therefore delighted, but not at all surprised, when we opened a recent copy of the “Echo” to find Brian staring back at us in a feature on the 35th. Anniversary of the Hospice!

Let’s Party!

In recognition of this milestone, and paying tribute to the patients and families it has cared for, the dedicated staff, volunteers, donors and partners who have helped shape its journey, St. Luke’s Hospice is warmly inviting the community to two special free Garden Parties at each of the Hospices:  The first one was in on June 14 in Thurrock and this is what was featured in the Echo (The second at Basildon will be on July 5).

Over the years, St Luke’s Hospice has expanded to offer 16 patient-facing services for those with life-limiting or palliative conditions, providing support from diagnosis and beyond.

A Warm Invitation

Eileen Marshall, CEO of St Luke’s Hospice, has been quoted “For 35 years, St Luke’s Hospice has been a vital part of our community, offering expert, compassionate care when it’s needed most.  ..... it’s a powerful reminder that the support we provide remains just as essential today as it was in 1990.”

“I warmly invite everyone - those who have supported us, been touched by our care, or want to learn more about our work - to join us in celebrating our 35th anniversary.  Together, we can honour the past and look to the future with hope.”

The Thurrock party was also attended by former CEO Barry Sanson.

Brian summed up his views: “I joined St Luke’s in 2018 as a Trustee. On my first tour of the building and to meet staff, I experienced what most volunteers find, this organisation is like no other.  There is a calmness and such devotion and care for the patients they serve.

I consider my role as Trustee to be both a privilege and rewarding to be part of St. Luke’s Hospice.”
